In India many people observe fast during the festivals. Fasting is not only a practice meant for spiritual reasons but also for health benefits people do observe a fast. Actually, fasting helps in detoxification and cleansing of your body and keeps your mind calm and composed.  This is really a good time to try different healthy refreshing drinks made of fresh fruits and herbs to keep your body active.

Take a look at these five refreshing beverages that you can have during your fast. These are not just nutritious, but also quite filling.

Watermelon Mint Juice

Slice and dice the 1 cup watermelon into small piece and remove the seeds. Take a blender and put the watermelon pieces along with 10 to 12 mint leaves, a pinch of black pepper, half tea spoon roasted cumin powder and half tea spoon rock salt to it. Also add few drops of lemon juice as per your taste in the blender. No need to add sugar as watermelon is already too sweet. Blend it well and strain. Garnish with a twig of mint leaves and serve cool.

Chikoo Milkshake

Wash the chikoo properly to make the outer layer soft. Then peel and chop 1 cup of chikoo and remove the seeds. Put one cup of chikoo a blender along with 1 cup of milk to it. Add sugar to taste and blend it until you get a smooth texture.

Papaya Muskmelon Juice

Peel and chop half papaya and half muskmelon. Put the chopped pieces in a blender along with one tbsp. of lime juice and few ice cubes in it. Whiz it well to make a smooth texture. Pour in a tall glass and garnish with a thin muskmelon slice before you serve.

Grape Juice

Take a cup of grapes of your preference: red, green or black. Wash them and let it soak in water in a large bowl/jar filled with water. Then in your favorite blender put the grapes and add a pinch of back salt and one teaspoon of lime juice or else you can also try a teaspoon of fruit chat masala. Blend it well and serve the tangy grape juice.

Strawberry watermelon Juice

Take 8 to 9 large or 1 cup Strawberries and 1 ½ cups of watermelon diced into small pieces in a blender and add 2-3 teaspoons lemon juice. Add half cup water and few ice cubes then give two to three long whizzes to make it smooth. Then strain the puree to obtain a glass of chilled and refreshing juice. Garnish with a slice of strawberry and serve.

Let’s Try Some Traditional Jaggery/Gud/Gur based Beverages…

Evolution of Indian cuisine dates back to near about 5,000-years ago. The cuisine of India is an amalgamation of various cultures, regional cuisines, and diversity of flavors. One of the most common and traditional ingredients of Indian kitchen is Jaggery or Gur or Gud. It is an unrefined form of sugar which acts as a sweetener and holds many health benefits. Having a little bit of jaggery or Gur after lunch or dinner activates the digestive enzymes and prevents constipation. It also boosts immunity and prevents respiratory disorders and anemia.

So let’s learn a few beverages made from jaggery or Gur.


Ingredients (for 4 servings): 1 cup jaggery powdered, 4 cups water, 3 to 4 pods powdered cardamom, 2 tsp ginger grated dried (chukku/sonth), Juice of 1/2 lime.



  1. Take the water in a Jug and dissolve the powdered jaggery. Keep it undisturbed for about 5 minutes allowing the impurities in the jaggery to settle down. Then, strain the jaggery water
  2. Add the cardamom, dried ginger, and lime juice and mix well.
  3. Pour into tall glasses and serve.
  4. You can also keep it in the refrigerator in case u want to have a chilled Paanakam.

Mango Jaggery Treat

Ingredients: 2 cups chopped mangoes, ½ cup jaggery powdered, 1 cup curd.

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a mixer along with 1 cup chilled water or some ice crush. Then blend it until it becomes smooth
  2. Pour into glasses and serve chilled.

Gud wali Chai (Jaggery Tea)

Ingredients: Jaggery (Gur) grated 3-4 tablespoons, Tea leaves 2 tablespoons, 4 broken Green cardamoms, Fennel seeds (saunf) 1 teaspoon, Crushed black peppercorns 1/2 teaspoon, Milk 1/2 cup.

Gud wali Chai (Jaggery Tea)


Take a saucepan and heat 1 cup water. Add cardamoms, crushed peppercorns, fennel seeds and tea leaves. Bring it to boil.

  1. Then, add milk and again bring it to boil.
  2. Put jaggery in the teapot and strain the prepared tea mixture into the teapot. Stir well until the jaggery melts.
  3. Serve hot.

Cocktail with a dash of Indian flavor!!

Last week I was in Goa and while having some cocktails at the famous Baga beach, I was thinking what if we can bring some desi Indian taste to the cocktails. So, I tried to make some Desi cocktails at home and trust me it was amazing. Here are some recipes that really took my heart…


This is a real refreshing cocktail to anyone. Apart from its stimulating flavor, it holds the benefits betel leaves, popularly suggested as a cure to the common cold. The vodka in this cocktail is just the cherry on top and provides you a festive feel.


Ingredients: 2 fresh paan leaves, 4 cardamoms, 1 spoon gulkand, 45ml vodka, 15ml Sambuca, 1 maraschino cherry.


Crush the paan or betel leaf, cardamom, and gulkand in a cocktail shaker. Add the Sambuca and vodka. Then add some ice crush and shake well. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice and betel leaves. Finally, garnish with cherry and cardamom.


According to some bartender experts, scotch and curry are the perfect combinations, when we look for a classy and yet spicy twist.


Ingredients: 60ml blended scotch, 25ml lemon juice, 25ml curry simple syrup, Handful of mint


Combine all the ingredients in the shaker. Shake well and then fine strain. Garnish with a thin lime slice and a tiny mint twig.


Another total desi and the yet amazing twist are when red wine combines with a couple of ingredients that can be easily available in any Indian Kitchen.


Ingredients: 1 bottle red wine, 60gm demerara sugar, 1 cinnamon stick, A pinch of grated nutmeg, 8 cloves, 2 big black cardamoms, 1 orange, sliced into half, 1 dried bay leaf, 60ml sloe or damson gin (optional)


Take a saucepan and put the wine in it along with orange, sugar, bay leaf and the spices. Heat it gently until the sugar gets dissolved. Remove the wine off the heat. Then stir in the sloe or damson gin if you want it. Strain into heatproof glasses and serve immediately.


Chai or the Tea, the most common and desi hot beverage of India, when added to vodka stirs your senses.


Ingredients: 4 masala chai tea bags, 1 cup boiling water, 1-ounce vodka, 1 ounce of any liqueur, Crushed ice, freshly ground nutmeg


Take a large cup, put the tea bags it and pour the boiling water. Let them steep in the water for a few minutes. Then take out the tea bags and refrigerate the tea for half an hour.

Take a martini shaker and add vodka, half a cup of the chilled tea and the liqueur of your preference (options are almond, hazelnut, orange or coconut). Then add crushed ice, and shake well.

Strain the liquid into a martini glass and garnish with grated nutmeg.

Considered as Lord Shiva’s Elixir, Bhang is the most common local beverage to get high. Popular in the northern parts of the nation, it is prepared by crushing the marijuana leaves to make a paste and combining the paste with milk, mangoes, ghee, and certain spices to get the bhang.



Chhang is the local liquor of Ladakh and North-East region of India. It is a barley-based alcoholic beverage, also called as the ‘hot beer’. Chhaang is prepared and consumed by the local people for centuries on almost all the socio-cultural activities celebrated in Ladakh.



Most popular local drink of Goa, Feni needs no introduction. Feni is prepared from cashew apple or coconut by fermenting it for four days. The beverage is used in cocktails as well to get unique taste and flavor. It is one of the cheapest options in Goa and has a major market share in Goa.



A local beverage of Hyderabad that contains high alcohol content and caution is advised before its intake. The Gudamba is prepared from the sugarcane or raw Jaggery and few Indian spices. These ingredients are left for fermentation for a few days in homemade earthen containers to form Gudumba.


Bangla is the alcoholic beverage of West Bengal which is also offered to the Goddess Durga Maa during festivals. This local alcoholic drink is prepared by fermenting cooked rice for many days and tastes brilliantly strong.


Handia also is known as Hadiya is a desi or local alcohol of Bihar, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Considered as local beer prepared by fermenting the boiled rice with a mix of about 20-25 herbs that act as fermenting agents.


Zawlaidi is a famous local wine in Mizoram that contains 11-14 percent of alcohol. This mild alcohol is prepared from locally produced grapes and cheaper than other options available in the state. Its bubbly taste makes it a unique drink as compared to other alcoholic beverages in the state.


Mahua is prepared from the desiccated Mahua flowers, commonly found in abundant Mahua trees in jungles of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and West Bengal. The drink is made by fermenting flowers that grow on the tree. The beverage is highly intoxicating and should not be consumed in large portions.


A mild and refreshing local drink prepared and consumed in Manali, Himachal Pradesh. The beverage is prepared by fermenting rice or barley.


Very popular alcohol prepared and consumed in Kerala, Toddy is one of the easiest beverages to make in the coastal areas. All it needs is to collect the flowers of the coconut trees and extract the juice from it and ferment to form a mildly alcoholic beverage with 5-10 percent of alcoholic content.

Government agency finds harmful and deadly chemicals in PepsiCo and Coca Cola

The Government agency picked some PET bottle samples of cold drinks and these samples are of Coca Cola, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sprite and 7Up and after checking them it was found that all of them were having toxins in them.

After studying these samples several toxins and heavy metals, lead chromium and cadmium DEHP were found in them which are being produced by two big companies, Coca Cola and PepsiCo.

This study was conducted by the Kolkata based All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health which works under the Health Ministry.

These results are shocking as earlier we heard that some cold drinks contains pesticides and now after this study it has been found that they contains different toxins and metals which are very harmful for us.

The results of these tests were submitted by the AIIH and PH to Director General of Health Services and chairman of DTAB, Jagdish Prasad a few days ago.

On this scenario the spokesperson of PepsiCo India, said that they have neither received any intimation nor a copy of the cited test reports and without an understanding of the methodology used, would be unable to comments on the reports. He further said that they would like to reiterate that all of their products conform to Food Safety and Standards Regulations and they would like to reiterate that their products comply with the permissible limits for heavy metals as laid down by these regulations.

The AIIH and PH picked 4 bottles of 600 ml size as samples by using stratified random sampling method and these samples were handed over to the Kolkata based National Test House, (NTH).

During the performance of tests of these heavy metals from the PET bottles the levels of heavy metals were found to increase with the increase in room temperature.

Even World Health Organization has also told that the lead and cadmium are two chemicals which are used in these cold drinks and pose a major health risk. The WHO has also told that children who drink these cold drinks are at major health risk as they are defenseless to harmful effects of lead.

WHO further explained that lead is very harmful as it directly attacks the brain and central nervous system which can even cause coma and in extreme cases death also. And children who survive from the lead poisoning may be left with mental retardation and other behavioral disorders.

And cadmium chemical is so toxic that it directly affects the kidneys, skeletal system and respiratory system.
