Hollywood has been a source of global entertainment for well over a century already and as such has given the world cinema more than enough gems. In today’s write-up, we are going to have a look at 7 such masterpieces. This list of classic movies include the ones that never fail to entertain you no matter how many times you watch them or even when- they are ageless like that. So here are the must-watch movies of the century past –

Still considered to be the ‘best film ever made’ by many, the 1941 classic Citizen Kane was directed by Orson Welles. A story of greed and power, it revolves around the investigation of a publishing tycoon’s death and how his last words reveal layer upon layers of conflicting stories and scandals. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and is one of the most quoted movies (English) of all times.

CASABLANCA (1942)

Directed by Michael Curtiz, this movie tells the story of two lovers in the backdrop of World War 2. It stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in lead roles as lovers ripped apart by war. They reunite years later and the movie captures the reigniting emotions beautifully. Its dialogues and one-liners are still widely quoted as well.

The musical which is funny and satisfying to watch at the same time- Singin’ in the Rain stars Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly. Seriously, the word ‘classic’ and ‘timeless’ can be called synonymous to this one and only after you watch it, will you realize just how many of its references we still use. This movie which gives us a glimpse of the transition of silent movies to sound is widely acclaimed and quoted. Just last year, the global phenomenon BTS paid homage to this film in their music video ‘Boy With Love’ which holds the record of most viewed MV on YouTube in the first 24 hours.

A must-watch comedy starring the iconic Audrey Hepburn! Breakfast at Tiffany’s is adapted from a book by Truman Capote and tells the story of Holly, a socialite with a dark past. This movie was the one that established Audrey Hepburn as one of the fashion icons and if you watch it, you’ll know why. A good story with memorable songs and a message that is well worthy of being remembered- all this and more makes Breakfast at Tiffany’s one of the must-watch classics.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962)See the source image

Adapted from Harper Lee’s widely acclaimed book of the same name, To Kill a Mockingbird stars, Gregory Peck, in the lead role of Atticus Finch, a lawyer and single father to two. The story incorporates 4 lessons that Finch passes on to his children and is told from the point of view of his daughter Scott. If you want some food for thought- watch this one.

Honestly, if you haven’t seen The Godfather, you can’t call yourself a movie lover. This first installment of the iconic trilogy directed by Francis Ford Coppola is a classic among classic and one you simply can’t miss. Adapted from a book by Maria Puzo, this movie stars Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in the roles of mafia and this is alone is a huge incentive to give The Godfather a watch and a re-watch.

This comedy-drama movie revolves around five high school students from different walks of life stuck together in a detention room on a Saturday. what follows is a coming-of-age story with which we can all relate to at some point. if you have already seen this one, you will understand what I am saying and if you haven’t… well what are you waiting for? this movie is a must-watch classic based on the ending alone- yes the iconic ending referenced time and again in popular media even now, the most recent example being BTS’ new music video ON. I mean, I still can’t get over that ending line though its been years already!

The Little Rascals is a must-watch movie which will make you remember your long-forgotten childhood antics and the innocence of first love.
