Today, India is celebrating Teachers’ Day in the memory of the nation’s first Vice President and second President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In 1962, when he became the President of India, some of his friends and students requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, on 5 September. Then, he replied,

Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day.

Since then the nation is celebrating Teacher’s Day on 5th of September every year.

Dr. Radhakrishnan was awarded many awards during his life, including the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India.
