Indian Railways high-speed, engine-less train set named Train 18 (T18) will be rolled out soon. The train set is manufactured in the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai and has been named as Train 18 in consonance with 2018, the year of its production. Watch this video to know more.
Train 18 is India’s first engine-less train. The trail will be conducted on Bareilly-Moradabad section on a standard railway track. Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) team has also reached Moradabad for the trial run.
Sources said that T18 is all set to have TEJAS train like fare structure. Flexi Fare mechanism will not be applicable on T18
T18 to have fares that will be higher than existing Shatabdi fares on any given route.
The TEJAS train fare structure is likely to be applicable on upcoming T18 where the fares will be 20-25% higher than Shatabdi fares.
T18 to have just 5-6 stoppages in its route journey.
“Train 18 will run at a maximum speed of 160 kmph between either Delhi and Varanasi or Delhi and Bhopal,” the official said.
The fully air-conditioned Train 18, driven by a self-propulsion module was launched last month amid much fanfare by Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani at the Integrated Coach Factory in Chennai.
“We have successfully achieved a speed of 120 kmph during trials. We will achieve a speed of 160 kmph and run the train likely by December 15,” the official said.
The gleaming, blue-nosed train has a cone-shaped frontage, similar to a bullet train.
It comes fitted with amenities on par with the best in the world from on-board WiFi to GPS-based passenger information system, ‘touch-free’ bio-vacuum toilets, LED lighting, mobile charging points, and a climate control system that would adjust the temperature according to occupancy and weather.
Manufactured at ICF (Integral Coach Factory) in Chennai, first train set has 16 chair-car type coaches — executive and non-executive. There are two executive chair cars and 14 non-executive chair cars. The maximum seating capacity of executive chair cars is 56 passengers, while those of non-executive is 78.
Train 18 offers onboard WiFi and infotainment for passengers. There is also GPS-based passenger information system. Charging points for the gadgets are right below the seats.
Journalists of vernacular digital and print media felicitated
Several journalists of digital media from all over the country were felicitated on the 25th August at the NDMC Convention Centre in New Delhi for their distinguished and outstanding contribution in investigative crime, political, economic and social journalism fighting odds and challenging situations and circumstances and disseminating vital news to the countrymen from ground zero in record time.
In all about 97 journalists were felicitated with outstanding digital journalism trophies hailing from different states of the country. A digital workshop was also organised on this occasion addressed by the digital expert from Bengal, Avnish Sarkar who gave various important tips to the journalists engaged in digital journalism including tips for marketing the products and their respective news websites for a wider global reach.
The workshop cum convention of digital media journalists, as well as journalists of vernacular print media and the award function, was organised by IPPCI in which about 500 digital and print media journalists, especially of vernacular media, were present.
About 97 journalists were felicitated by none other than the defence expert and former Lt general Mr. Sehgal, Major General Soi, and Brigadier Malhotra amid applause and cheers from the audience. Out of the 97 journalists honoured on this occasion six journalists from Uttarakhand viz Ashutosh Negi from PAURI Garhwal, Sunil Gupta from Dehradun, Shiv Prasad Semwal from Dehradun and Tehri Garhwal, Rajnish Dhyani, Shiv Narayan Singh, Devendra Kumar from Rishikesh and Rakesh Chandra from Almora, Uttarakhand. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: beginning of a new era of technology
People have been synthesizing automatons for a long time, but artificial intelligence was first discussed in the 1950s, after Herbert Simon argued that computers could think, based on the ideas of Alan Turing. Subsequently, artificial intelligence became established. The technologies that assist in the handling of knowledge are broadly referred to as artificial intelligence (AI). A broad overview of artificial intelligence and a more detailed view of its two branches – expert systems and neural networks – are given in this chapter.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is concerned with using computers to perform tasks that would be called ‘intelligent’ if people did them. The objectives are two-fold: to improve understanding of human cognition and to improve the potential of the computer as a tool for problem-solving.
According to Holsapple and Whinston (1987), ‘artificial intelligence is the activity of providing such machines as computers with the ability to display behavior that would be regarded as intelligent if it were observed in humans.’
Another definition of artificial intelligence is: ‘A field of study that designs and develops machines capable of performing tasks that would require intelligence if performed by a human being (Rich, 1987).
HISTORY OF AI
The term AI was coined by Jhon McCarthy as the theme of a conference held at Dartmouth College. In the same year, the first AI computer program, called Logic Theorist, was announced. This program encouraged researchers to develop another program, called the General Problem Solver (GPS), that was intended for use in solving problems of all kinds.
For the past 15-20 years, there has been an increasing interest in using the computer for artificial intelligence. The idea is to develop a machine that can reason, learn, understand, recall and explain its behavior, and actions can be viewed as an intelligent machine. However, even today, three to four decades after AI was conceived, the creation of truly intelligent machines is still not quite a reality.
AREAS OF AI
The areas that influence AI and the branches of AI are expert systems, robotics, natural language, learning, computer vision, perceptive systems, AI hardware, and neural networks. These areas are illustrated in the below figure which indicates a certain amount of overlap among the areas. The overlap illustrates the way that one area can benefit others. A brief explanation of various branches of AI is given.
- Expert systems are computer programs that attempt to represent the knowledge of human experts, in the form of heuristics, in a specialized area. An expert system stores the knowledge of an expert in a specific area of studies, such as production engineering and genetic engineering. The system applies various reasoning methods to the information stored in it, in order to solve complex problems that require both knowledge and intuition. Sometimes, the problem-solving capabilities of such systems are as good as, or even better than, those of human experts.
- Perceptive systems use visual images and auditory signals to instruct computers or rather devices, such as robots.
- Computer vision is to endow computers with the ability to recognize and identify objects and the context to which they belong. Vision capabilities enhance the ability of computers to emulate human intelligence.
- Natural language processing enables users to communicate with the computer in foreign languages.
- Learning encompasses all of the activity that enables the computer to or another device to acquire knowledge in addition to what has been entered into the memory by its manufacturer or by programmers.
- AI hardware includes the physical device that aid in AI application.
- Robotics consists of computer-controlled devices that mimic the motor activities of humans.
- Neural networks are highly simplified models of the human nervous system that exhibit abilities such as learning, generalization, and abstraction. These abilities enable the models to learn human-like behavior.
Usage of AI
AI is important because it can help solve immensely difficult issues in various industries, such as entertainment, education, health, commerce, transport, and utilities. AI applications can be grouped into five categories:
- Reasoning: The ability to solve problems through logical deduction. e.g. financial asset management, legal assessment, financial application processing, autonomous weapons systems, games
- Knowledge: The ability to present knowledge about the world. e.g. financial market trading, purchase prediction, fraud prevention, drug creation, medical diagnosis, the media recommendation
- Planning: The ability to set and achieve goals. e.g. inventory management, demand forecasting, predictive maintenance, physical and digital network optimization, navigation, scheduling, logistics
- Communication: The ability to understand spoken and written the language. e.g. real-time translation of spoken and written languages, real-time transcription, intelligent assistants, voice control
- Perception: The ability to infer things about the world via sounds, images, and other sensory inputs. e.g. medical diagnosis, autonomous vehicles, surveillance.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has often been popularly envisaged in super-smart humanoid robot form. In fact, it’s more commonly implemented as behind-the-scenes algorithms that can process ‘big’ data to accomplish a range of relatively mundane tasks far more efficiently than humans can.
Prospects of AI
In the next 10 years, technologies in narrow fields such as speech recognition will continue to improve and will reach human levels. In 10 years AI will be able to communicate with humans in unstructured English using text or voice, navigate (not perfectly) in an unprepared environment and will have some rudimentary common sense (and domain-specific intelligence).
It will recreate some parts of the human (animal) brain in silicon. The feasibility of this is demonstrated by tentative hippocampus experiments in rats. There are two major projects aiming for human brain simulation, CCortex, and IBM Blue Brain.
There will be an increasing number of practical applications based on digitally recreated aspects of human intelligence, such as cognition, perception, rehearsal learning, or learning by repetitive practice. Robots take over everyone’s jobs.
The development of meaningful artificial intelligence will require that machines acquire some variant of human consciousness. Systems that do not possess self-awareness and sentience will at best always be very brittle. Without these uniquely human characteristics, truely useful and powerful assistants will remain a goal to achieve.
Challenges of AI
The foremost factor is blockchain technology (also known as Distributed Ledger Technology) and its potential seismic impact on financial transactions across the globe. Blockchain technology has started sweeping the different areas of transactional finance, such as clearing, settlement, payments. Secondly, although it is still in its infancy, we know that there are many algorithmic trading systems used around the world in different streams of asset management.
Challenges and cope up in Indian context
Indians must upskill in the IT sector to survive and this is increasingly acknowledged. But there are constraints that go beyond an over-emphasis on low-end technical services. While the country is not an entrepreneurial epicenter for artificial intelligence, many of the executives who are a part of the ecosystem of over 170 AI startups point out that they face enormous staffing challenges.
There simply is not enough AI talent in the country as only 4% of AI professionals in India have worked on emerging technologies such as deep learning and neural networks and many companies require candidates to have a Ph.D. in the field, which is even scarcer in India.
According to AI startup founders Subrat Parida and Navneet Gupta, they spend 40% of their time just looking for talented engineers and it is immensely difficult to find people with the right training and experience in AI.
India must address its shortage of engineers with training in machine learning, analytics, and robotics. However, the problems go beyond training. There is a particular mindset that is required as AI is a discovery-oriented and novel field that requires professionals with an appetite for research and experimentation.
Thus, the challenges experienced by Indian startups in AI are related to a deeper problem. But the threat posed by automation and artificial intelligence means that the greatest risk of all is not acting, not investing and not innovating in the technologies of the future.
Although we don’t know the exact future, it is quite evident that interacting with AI will soon become an everyday activity. These interactions will clearly help our society evolve, particularly in regards to automated transportation, cyborgs, handling dangerous duties, solving climate change, friendships and improving the care of our elders. Beyond these six impacts, there are even more ways that AI technology can influence our future and this very fact has professionals across multiple industries extremely excited for the ever-burgeoning future of artificial intelligence.

The S (big surprise) stands for “Secure”. If you visit a Website or web page and look at the address in the web browser, it is likely, to begin with, the following: http://.
This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular unsecured language. In other words, it is possible for someone to “eavesdrop” on your computer’s conversation with the Website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.
This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an Http website! But if the web address begins with https://, that means your computer is talking to the website in a Secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.
Now, you understand why this is so important, right?
If a website ever asks you to enter your Credit/Debit card Information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://.
If it doesn’t, you should NEVER enter sensitive Information such as a credit/debit card number.
While checking the name of any website, first look for the domain extension (.com or .org, .co, .in, .net etc). The name just before this is the domain name of the website. Eg, in the above example, http://amazon.diwali-festivals.com, the word before .com is “diwali-festivals” (and NOT “amazon”). So, this webpage does not belong to amazon.com but belongs to “diwali-festivals.com”, which we all haven’t heard of before.
You can similarly check for bank frauds. Before your ebanking logins, make sure that the name just before “.com” is the name of your bank. “Something.icicibank.com” belongs to icici; but, icicibank.some1else.com belongs to “some1else”.
Https doesn’t mean it is secure as the https server may be compromised and masquerading as a genuine server. There are many inherent issues in the current standard tls1.2 which will be taken care of by the new protocol tls1.3, which is much more safer

WhatsApp Dark Mode for Android
The first step to be able to enable dark mode for WhatsApp on your device is to run the latest Android Q beta version. Once you have the OS running on your device, follow these steps:
- Turn on the Android Q’s native dark theme on the device by going to Settings, select Display, select theme, and then choose ‘dark’.
- Once you have enabled the dark theme, you then have to turn on ‘developer options’. To enable developer options, go to Settings, select about phone, and then tap the “build number” seven times.
- Now that you’ve enabled the developer option, you need to select “override force-dark” to apply the theme across all the apps on the phone.
- Since you have applied dark mode across all the apps, you’ll notice that WhatsApp too would have a dark theme across it. To apply dark mode to chat threads, hit settings – wallpaper – no wallpaper to darken up the thread section. You have now dark mode enabled on WhatsApp.
So, that was super simple on Android. Now, let’s quickly look at how you can enable dark mode on WhatsApp for iOS.
WhatsApp Dark Mode for iOS
We’ll now look at the ‘smart-invert’ method that basically uses the iOS 11’s “smart invert’ feature that reverses the display color in an iPhone. can give your WhatsApp a darker appearance on iOS.
Once you have iOS 11 on your phone, go to settings, select General, then Accessibility, select display accommodations – Invert colors – smart invert. You’ll have a darker- looking appearance across your device, without it interfering with the quality of your photos or video.

DARK MODE STARTS TO SHOW UP IN GMAIL FOR ANDROID
Google is about to introduce a System-Wide Dark Theme with the arrival of Android Q. However, many apps from the company still lack proper Dark Mode. Gmail is one of these apps, but according to a new report, this is about to change. Google’s App, Drive and Keep already received their Darker treatment, now the search giant is working hard to deliver a proper experience on their popular e-mail app.
According to a report from AndroidPolice, the long overdue dark mode is starting to show up in Gmail App. However, it still needs to be fully implemented. While developers could found it after digging into the code, the app still lacks a toggle to enable and disable the Dark interface. Furthermore, the dark mode seems to be available in settings only for the time being. It currently, pops up randomly whenever it wants.
Gmail is one of the most popular Google Apps for Android device. So it’s a bit curious to see many other G-apps getting Dark UI treatment and Gmail left in the light-blinding the only option. Google now allows you to flag deceptive sites with a new Chrome extension
Google’s Safe Browsing feature will only work if it knows what websites to protect you against, which is why the tech giant is encouraging users to report suspicious sites. The company has launched a new Chrome extension called Suspicious Site Reporter, which provides you a quick way to let Google know if a website looks, well, suspicious. It adds a flag right next to your other extensions that turns orange if it finds anything doubtful about the page you’re visiting.
Sometimes the things it considers questionable are as trivial as the website not belonging in the top 5,000. But if it does find something truly unsavory, you can easily notify Google by clicking the Send Report button, which will send the company that website’s URL, a screenshot of it and all the site’s HTML. True-caller gets free Internet voice call feature
To facilitate high quality Internet calls, communication app Truecaller on Tuesday launched a new feature called “Truecaller Voice” for its 140 million daily active users globally, the company said in a statement.
The in-app voice over Internet protocol (VoIP)-based feature would allow users to make free, high quality, low latency and quick to connect audio calls through Wi-Fi or mobile data connectivity.
“We are looking forward to effectively provide an end-to-end communication experience, where users can call, text, chat, filter messages, block spam and even make digital payments, all in one app,” said Rishit Jhunjhunwala, Vice President, Product, Truecaller.
The company had quietly started rolling out this feature to Android users from earlier this month.
“We are also planning to expand this feature to iOS in a few weeks,” Jhunjhunwala added.
In February, the app crossed 100 million daily users mark in India, from where the company attracts over 60 per cent of its global user base.
Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, Truecaller was founded by Alan Mamedi and Nami Zarringhalam in 2009.
