It was indeed a very privileged ocassion to meet a greatest cricketer of his time known as a sixer man, tall and still hale and hearty Salim Durrani in PCI yesterday, at the age of 85, alongwith other friends.

There was a time about five decades ago when his sixes were the point of debate and discussions amongst the billions of cricket fans in India.

An outstanding batsman and a left armed bowler having taken lots of wickets, Salim Durrani primarily belonged to Junagarh, Gujarat and his father Abdul Aziz was also a renowned cricketer having played test matches for India during 1935 to 1940 and brought laurels for the country.

A down to earth, jovial and happy man even at 86, having also acted as a Hero in a movie called Charitra decades ago with the famous bollywood actress Parveen Bobby Salim Durrani Sahib has refuted that he ever had love relationship with her as was the controversy raised in the then bollywood magazines n rest of the newspapers in the country. He added that he was shocked, really grief stricken and felt very bad to hear her traumatic death inside a house in Bombay with nobody even knowing about her sad demise.

Durrani Sahab says that she was just a good friend as she also belonged to Junagarh, Gujarat from where he too belonged. He said the media always make mountains out of the mole and so was my relationship as a friend with Late Parveen Bobby twisted and blown out of proportion for nothing but enhancing their TRPs.

He was answering about this interesting query put forward by senior journalist Shelly Vishwajit who readily and as a matter of privilege hosted few Bacardi drinks to him despite his calm deniel, insisting that he will bear for it.

A tall man giving a Pathan look though bit thin Salim Durrani was born in Kabul Afghanisthan on 11th December, 1934 and later on shifted to India during partition. He is currently living in Jaipur Rajasthan. He was the first cricketer to have been honoured with the prestigious ARJUNA AWARD.

According to Bharath Ramraj in crizzbuzz.com Salim Durani is the only Test cricketer, who was born in Afghanistan. The Kabul-born cricketer, Durani bowled slow left-arm orthodox and was known for his striking prowess as a batsman. During his childhood days, Durani took part in a variety of sports like cricket, tennis and football. However, cricket was his first love. His father Abdul Aziz was a decent cricketer, who once played for India in an ‘unofficial’ Test match against the Australians in 1935-36. As his father used to work for the ruler of Jamnnagar, he shifted with his family to that place.

Even after the partition, Durani (Jnr) continued to live in Jamnagar. However, his father made his move to Karachi and became well-known as a coach. It is believed that one of his students was none other than the legendary opening batsman from Pakistan, Hanif Mohammad. Durani made his Test debut at the age of 25 against a Richie Benaud-led Australian side in Mumbai in 1960. Interestingly, he got his chance only because Jasu Patel, the off-spinner, who had turned the previous Test match played in Kanpur in India’s favour with a bagful of wickets, was down with food poisoning.

Durani’s greatest moment came in the series against England in 1961-62. If he took eight wickets in Kolkata, then in the next game in Chennai, he ended up with a 10-for. India tasted victory in that series. In 1962, Durani also registered his one and only Test hundred against West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad. In 1966 though, after playing with guts and gumption against Charlie Griffith and Wes Hall to score a fifty in a Test match in Mumbai, he suffered a knee injury and with the selectors looking out for younger players, he soon found himself in the wilderness.

Durani though, made a sterling comeback into the side by playing a key role in India’s first ever Test win against West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad, 1971. It was his double strike to remove Clive Lloyd and Garry Sobers in the second innings that paved the way for India to achieve a historic victory. Durani played his last Test against England at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai in 1973. In fact, he had made his Test debut, too, at the same stadium.

Even now, connoisseurs fondly remember Durani for his six-hitting prowess. In 1973, when he was dropped for a Test match in Kanpur, the crowd had shouted, \”No Durani, no Test!\”. Durani was also known for his dashing looks and acted in a film called Charitra opposite Parveen Babi in 1973. Durani was the first ever cricketer to win the Arjuna Award. In 2011, he was honoured with the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award by the BCCI.

Nobody really knows what’s in store for them.

Destiny is truly unpredictable. If luck favor’s someone, then it can be a rag to riches story within a short span of time.

One can become a millionaire even in a single night. This may happen once in a while and not always, but in the case of the poor Ranu Mandal, this did happen. Once singing on the distant railway platforms of West Bengal, Ranaghat to be exact, to earn a living singing as a pauper, 59 years Ranu Mandal today is a singing sensation in Bollywood with incessant demands for live shows from various parts of the country.

Sounds unusual and unbelievable, but this is true. Once she was a lady in tatters who was left alone in depression even by own her daughter. Now the entire Mumbai film industry is her fan as her melodious voice has not only impressed, enthralled and mesmerized millions of people in India but also the many music directors, who are keen to offer her a chance to sing in their albums and Bollywood movies. Her daughter too, is back with her after she has become famous.

Ranu Mandal with her daughter

It’s indeed a rag to riches story, an unexpected dream come true for the poorest of the poor Ranu Mandal who till a few months ago used to sing casually in one of the railway platforms of West Bengal. She mostly hymned the hit song of the legendary star and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, from the movie SHOR “Ye Pyar Ka Nagma Hai, Maujon Ki Rawaani Hai, Zindagi Aur Kuch Bhi Nahi, Teri Meri Kahani Hai”, just to make ends meet. She normally survived on a meal or two or a biscuit packet.

One day a passerby, namely Atindra Chakravarty noticed her melodious voice and by chance recorded her song on mobile and shared it on Facebook which went on to become viral. It was no looking back for Ranu Mandal thereafter who’d never in her wildest dreams, dreamt of gaining so much popularity in social media. A die-hard fan of the singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, Ranu’s video became so widely viral that crores of people saw and heard her melodious voice on social networking sites. She became a star just in a few nights. Fortunately, the television channels too started airing her video and she was invited in a reality show in Mumbai as a guest singer. Her real-life story was also telecast on news television channels.

She sang a song on the request of the popular Bollywood singer and musician Himesh Reshammiya in a Mumbai studio after she was offered the chance by the latter in one of the popular singing reality shows on Indian television. Himesh Reshammiya was so impressed by her sound quality and melodious voice that he invited her to the recording studio and recorded a song for his film, the brief promo of which has also been posted on Facebook. “Today, I met Ranuji and I feel that she is blessed with divinity. Her singing was mesmerizing and I could not stop myself from offering her the best I could.” – Himesh Reshammiya. He has offered her a singing contract for the upcoming movie, ‘Happy Hardy and Heer’.

Ranu Mandal with Himesh Reshammiya

In a singing reality show, Ranu Mandol in tears explained how she used to sing on the railway platform for hours together to get a few coins, biscuit packets, and food. She never expected such a miracle in her terribly broken life. Today, her relatives who never even cared for her during her days as a pauper, are coming to greet her and even her daughter who’d left her ten years ago while Ranu was in depression, all of a sudden returned to her star mother. Ranu, however, has no qualms with her past life. Her story is a classic example of the saying: ‘Bhagwan Ke Ghar Dher Hai, Andher Nahi’.

Ranu Mandal and Salman Khan

There are rumors that superstar  Salman Khan is also a fan of her now after hearing her melodious voice and is also intending to record a song in her sweet voice for one of his forthcoming films and it is rumored that he has also gifted her a house in Mumbai.

“This is my second life. And I will try to make the most out of it,” Ranu Mandal says.

Very similar to the Akki’s disguise in the prequel, the Luka Chuppi actor is wearing an ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ imprinted yellow dhoti and kurta. Kartik’s look in the poster itself expresses that he is all set to take forward ‘The-Akshay-Kumar’ legacy with this horror-comedy franchise.

A beautiful actress of Bollywood who made a remarkable mark as a heroine unparalleled with her outstanding beauty and acting on the silver screen during the seventies and eighties, versatile actor Vidya Sinha is no more with us.
She left for her heavenly abode on the 15th August, after suffering from a severe lung ailment on the 73rd Independence day anniversary. When the entire nation was celebrating the independence of the largest democracy of the world the family of Vidya Sinha and Bollywood was grief-stricken as the 71-year-old actress once loved and adored by millions had left all of us in grief.
The winner of the Bombay beauty contests a simple-looking beautiful actress with sharp mesmerizing features Vidya Sinha was for the very first time noticed by the eminent filmmaker in one of the advertisements in the seventies and wasted no time in approaching her to act in his significant movie Rajnigandha which later on won several prestigious awards. There was no looking back for Vidya Sinha thereafter, once a shy girl who came into modeling after winning the Bombay beauty pageant before her debut film Rajnigandha. Vidya Sinha always maintained a safe distance from the razzle-dazzle of Bollywood.
However, when a win at Miss Mumbai beauty contest led to modeling offers she did not shy away. Rajnigandha in 1974 was her debut movie directed by eminent film director Basu Chatterjee who noticed her outstanding beauty and acumen after seeing her in one of the advertisements. Her unfussy, middle-class working girl, commuting in public transport, wearing printed sarees and carrying a faithful handbag, struck a direct chord with the audience of the middle class in particular and also with the people of other segments. She was indeed awesome and best at acting. In Basuda’s movies, her character as a middle-class woman suited her best.
Even after four decades her movies and acting as a beautiful heroine has left her imprint in everybody’s minds and hearts. It looks as if its justs yesterday’s films and Vidya Sinha is still the same young heroine acting flawlessly with stars like Sanjeev Kumar, Amol Palekar, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, and Shashi Kapoor. Vidya Sinha acted with several prominent superstars and actors of seventies and eighties in movies like Rajnigandha, Choti Si Baat, Pati Patni Aur Woh, Inkaar, Karm, Mukti, Meera, Swayamvar, etc from 1974  till 1980. She acted in several serials as well, the recent one being Tulsi on the television screen. Vidya Sinha showed that she is equally adept in mainstream ‘Rona Dhona’ as she is in middle-of-the-road cinema.
Long before the live-in relationships became acceptable to Indian society Vidya Sinha and Rajesh Khanna portrayed one in B.R. Chopra’s Karm. Owing to some ominous predictions made by a family astrologer, the duo could not marry. They lived together anyway, causing much hue and cry, this among one of the many affairs of Rajesh Khanna.
Vidya Sinha’s greatest regret was of turning down Raj Kapoor’s SATYAM SHIVAM SUNDARAM.
