A 20-year-old youth from Jalgaon district was arrested for impersonating as an Armed Force Medical College (AFMC) medical cadet. Police have recovered photographs of the AFMC campus from his mobile phone and some rubber stamps having names of some AFMC authorities.

The youth identified as Sayyad Junaid Sayyad Akhtar was roaming in the Command hospital in Wanowrie area wearing the uniform of AFMC medical cadet when he was accosted by security guards, who later handed him over to Wanowrie Police on Monday night.

Akhtar is a resident of Bhusawal road area in Jalgaon district. Police have slapped charges of impersonating a public servant under section 170, punishment for forgery under section 465 and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On Monday night, security guards and some army officials spotted Akhtar loitering in the premises of the Command Hospital. He was wearing the uniform of AFMC medical cadets. However, the security guards spotted some discrepancies in his uniform and they accosted him,” assistant police inspector VD Raut of Wanowrie police station who is investigating the case told DNA.

“When the security guards asked him his details, he showed them AFMC’s identity card and told them that he was pursuing MBBS from the college. When the guards kept questioning him, he could not give satisfactory answers and that grew suspicion about his credentials,” Raut said.

When the security guards frisked Akhtar, they found some rubber stamps in his possession. “These rubber stamps were made using the names of AFMC authorities. Apart from the stamps, some photos of AFMC campus were also found in his mobile phone after which he was handed over to Wanowrie police for further action,” the police officer said.

After arresting the person, he was produced before the local court on Tuesday. Police sought his police custody stating that they need to find out if he has sent the photos of AFMC campus to any other person, what was the purpose of getting fake rubber stamps and from where he got the uniform of AFMC medical cadet. Accepting the request, the court has remanded Akhtar to police custody till December 29.
