The long-awaited triple talaq bill has finally been passed in Rajya Sabha today after its already been okayed from Lok Sabha. History has indeed been created as millions of Muslim women suffering from the fear and apprehensions of verbal triple talaq through phone, WhatsApp and in the direct conversation since the last seven decades have finally been freed from the patriarchal shackles. It’s indeed a great victory for the ruling BJP led NDA and women of the minority community of the country, especially those hailing from the lowest ebb usually harassed and traumatized by their husbands under the garb of giving them instant divorce by uttering Talaq thrice. In today’s voting that ended in the Rajya Sabha today after protracted debate amongst the opposition and ruling party MPs, the 99 MPs of the BJP and its allies voted in favor of the bill while Congress and others voted against numbering 84. Now since the Triple Talaq Bill would become a law after the signature of the president the erring husbands giving Triple Talaq would be penalized for three years rigorous imprisonment, the clause the Congress party and its leader in the Rajya Sabha were opposing tooth and nail. The Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had unambiguously said that it will be forced to vote against the bill as it has a criminal provision for three years imprisonment for the erring husband but no guarantee of any financial support to the distressed family from the government in the event of the husband going to the jail thus leaving the woman and her children in crisis. What Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad fails to understand is that some kind of deterrent is needed to prevent these erring husbands. Congress even tried to drag in lynchings and Godhra to this historic debate to sideline the main issue and to provoke.

The prime minister Narendra Modi said that the medieval practice has finally come to an end and oppressed women of the minority community freed from the age-old traditional shackles of instant triple talaq. Prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted: An archaic and medieval practice has finally been confined to the dustbin of history. Parliament abolishes Triple Talaq and corrects a historical wrong done to the Muslim women. The opposition tried its best to provoke the Muslim community starting with Congress, calling it an agenda against Muslim men. The rejected and dejected opposition tried its best to provoke the Muslim community right from Parliament to social media.

He tweeted again: This is an occasion to salute the remarkable courage of those Muslim women who have suffered great wrongs just due to the practice of Triple Talaq.

The abolition of Triple Talaq will contribute to women empowerment and give women the dignity they deserve. The prime minister also thanked the opposition parties for making this possible. PM Narendra Modi’s earlier tweet says: I thank all parties and MPs who have supported the passage of Muslim Women ( Protection of Rights of Marriage) Bill 2019 in both the houses of parliament. They have risen to the occasion and this step of theirs will forever be remembered in India’s history.
President of India Ram Nath Kovind also congratulated on the occasion of the passing of the Triple Talaq Bill in Rajya Sabha today. In a tweet he said:

The passage in the Rajya Sabha of Muslim Women ( Protection of Rights of Marriage) Bill completes Parliament’s approval of a ban on the inequitable practice of Triple Talaq.

The president of India expressing his jubilation over the passage of the bill in the upper house termed it a milestone in the quest for gender justice and a moment of satisfaction for the entire country. The President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted: Passage in the Rajya Sabha of Muslim Women ( Protection of Rights of Marriage ) Bill completes Parliament’s approval of a ban on the inequitable practice of triple talaq. A milestone in the quest for gender justice; a moment of satisfaction for the entire country.

Historic day and a giant step in the empowerment of Muslim women and a slap on the face of those who engage in fearmongering. A historic blunder set right. Muslim women celebrate this historic day.
