This year, in the wake of the ongoing pandemic, most of the films have skipped theatrical release, and are moving forward with having direct releases on the various OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, etc… Be it the Big B starring film Gulabo Sitaabo or the time-travel based web series Dark, the viewership of the OTT platforms has skyrocketed in the past few months. One after the other many hit films and web series has taken the internet by storm and made sure to cast away our lockdown blues. And this time too, it’s no different.

So, here’s for you 6 of the amazing shows (movies and web series) that the streaming giant Netflix is going to or have recently added to their already existing extensive library. Happy binge-watching!

Starring Radhika Apte, Ila Arun, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, this is a mystery thriller directed by the brilliant Honey Trehan which was released on Netflix recently, on the 31st of July. Filled with action and drama, this story revolves around the investigative officer, Siddiqui, and his accidental meet with the other characters, Radhika Apte and Shweta Tripathi, while working on a high profile case, which changes his life forever.

Who isn’t familiar with this man, or if not him, then his voice? For decades, the documentaries and shows on National Geographic, Discovery, BBC, and most of the other channels could not be made more engaging than having his charismatic voice enthrall the viewers. Yes, you are right, it is none other than the magnanimous David Attenborough.

This celebrated naturalist recently celebrated his 94th birthday in the month of May and so, to commemorate the remarkable contributions made by him, to the world of flora and fauna, all these years, the World Wide Fund for Nature and Silverback Films joined hands to produce this amazing documentary – David Attenborough: a Life on Our Planet, that was premiered for the first time on Netflix in the month of April. Reflecting on his wonderful journey as a naturalist, this documentary gives everyone an opportunity to know him better, to witness some of the defining moments in his life, and to see through his eyes, the devastation done to the world of nature by us, humans.

3. Bombay Rose

Bombay Rose – A Film Festival Favorite 

Premiering for the first time at the International Critics Week, in the 2019 Venice Film Festival, this film won the hearts with its beautiful plot. Written, designed, and directed by the same person, this film finally unveils the long-awaited debut of Gitanjali Rao. Revolving around the lives of those who migrate from small towns, this Netflix release presents a beautiful real-life depiction of the dreams they have, that of seeking a minimal life in the maximum city, and the associated hardships which come handy to them. An animated feature, this is basically a tale of a flower seller, her journey, and her dilemma of choosing to protect her family or allowing herself to fall in love.

4. Mismatched

Starring the Youtube sensation Prajakta Kohli aka MostlySane and the phenomenal young dapper actor Rohit Saraf, Mismatched is a Netflix original series based on the book, ‘When Dimple met Rishi.’ Koli, by the amazing Sandhya Menon. In the words of director Akarsh Khurana, this film is about the know-it-alls knowing nothing and how, one being a tech wizard and another searching for his happily ever after, come together to build an amazing app whilst navigating through an oddball bunch of friends, nasty bullies, a snooty professor and, of course, themselves. 

5. Wizards: Tales of Arcadia

From the young to the old, everyone is fascinated by the world of fiction, and especially when it is animated.  produced by DreamWorks Animation Television and Double Dare You Productions, Wizards: Tales of Arcadia is a computer-animated sci-fi series created by the remarkable Mexican film director, producer, and writer, Guillermo del Toro that would be released this August on Netflix. This series takes the viewers on a fantasy journey to the small suburban town of Arcadia Oaks and revolves around how the young heroes stand against the evil forces that lurk in the shadows.

6. A Suitable Boy

A Suitable Boy – Welcome To The New India

Starring the phenomenal actress Tabu alongside the amazing Namit Das and Randeep Hooda, this film is based on Mira Nair’s highly-anticipated adaptation of Vikram Seth’s famous novel A Suitable Boy. Featuring debut by the TVF FLAMES youth star, Tanya Maniktala, this is a six-part Netflix series that narrates the tale of a spirited university student Lata (Maniktala) and her journey of love, whilst the background of the newly-independent nation, India, that is going for its first-ever elections. Drama, emotion, and action, this to-be-launched series has it all.
