North Korea

The United Nations will not work effectively if it is used merely as forum for destructive propaganda.

Tennyson in ‘Locksley Hall’ presented his vision of the world where “war-drum throbb’d no longer, and the battle flags were furled.” Mudaliar, the Dewan of Mysore speaking on behalf of undivided India had once said, the great reality, which all religions teach is the dignity of the common man.

However, all those words rang hollow, when the Indian and Pakistani delegations faced each other in the U.N. Reality was rare, as even the photograph brandished by Pakistan’s Maleeha Lodhi as being from Jammu and Kashmir was actually from Gaza. In any case, the India-Pakistan war of words was outdone by the U.S. and North Korea.

However UN’s 72nd General Assembly was made one of its most disappointing sessions because of its ineffectiveness on each of the issues pointed out by Secretary General António Guterres in his speech on September 19.

According to him seven biggest threats that face the world today are:

  • Nuclear peril.
  • Terrorism.
  • Unresolved conflicts and violations of international humanitarian law.
  • Growing inequality.
  • Climate change.
  • Cyber warfare and misuse of artificial intelligence.
  • Refugees.

UN’s actions in the case of North Korea just amounted to some more sanctions against it. The truth about sanctions is that they do not work on rogue states but they only isolate their populations from the world, which works in favour of regime’s stranglehold on its people.

On the basis of satellite pictures and the accounts of eyewitnesses, the UN Human Rights chief called military action in post-democracy Myanmar,  a “textbook case of ethnic cleansing”, as close to half a million Rohingya fled from Rakhine villages that were then burnt down and landmines were laid along the border with Bangladesh to prevent their return.

Given that Hafiz Saeed and his associates now plan to stand for public office in Pakistan and while Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi received bail despite financial sanctions, more action is expected from U.N.

Mr. Guterres pointed out on the issue of inequalities that, “eight men represent as much of the world’s wealth as half of all humanity”

UN’s first Secretary General, Trygve Lie, ran an equally divided forum and faced the same challenges before finally resigning from his post in 1952. His last words were, “The United Nations will not work effectively if it is used merely as forum for destructive propaganda. Neither will it work if it is used only as a convenience when national interests are directly involved, and regarded with indifference, or bypassed or opposed, when the general world interest is paramount.”

Two U.S Bomber planes have taken a flight over the disputed region of the South China Sea. According to the U.S. air force, the demonstration of the bombing run, declared the privilege to treat the region as international territory rather than China’s own, as China is in the habit of assuming.

Other countries which claim a part in the disputed region include Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. The region sees more than $5,000,000,000,000 worth of trade on the passing ships.

The flight was taken by the B-1B Lancer Bomber planes from U.S. Air force Base, located in Guam. The run occurred on July 6, just before U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are getting ready for a meeting on the occasion of G20 summit to be held in Germany.

The two great political leaders were required to talk about China’s role over Missile and atomic weapon programs of North Korea. North Korea recently tested an intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4. The Missile, according to a few weapon specialists has the capability to target Hawaii and Alaska and maybe the Pacific Northwest region of U.S.

Trump has been considering using China in an effort to dominate the North Korea. The U.S. military, staying apart from such political strategies, has clearly stated its “freedom of navigation” rights in the still disputed territory of the South China Sea, which has clearly irritated China.

The United States has opposed China’s building of military base on South China Sea reefs and small islands it has built. The U.S. is clearly worried that they could be utilized by China to expand its territorial threat.

The U.S. Lancers had also taken a flight over the South China Sea a month ago, from the same U.S. air force Base in Guam. Their flight was timed with a U.S. warship, which drilled 12 nautical miles inside of one of China’s fake islands, in the month of May.

Chinese Foreign Ministry representative Geng Shuang said there was no issue with navigational freedom or a usual over-flight over the East and South China Seas. However, he also said that China steadfastly restricts singular nations utilizing the standard of navigational freedom and over-flight, to parade military force and mischief China’s power and security, only for a show of power.

Much is being talked about how US President-elect Donald Trump  foreign policy will unfold in the Middle East where America is leading the coalition to fight ISIS, some critical decisions about Pacific where China, a close ally of North Korea is determinant power will also have a bearing on US-China changing relations. With Trump  devising new terms and conditions for the military alliance between US-Japan-South Korea after January 20th whereby these countries will have to put their defense expenditure, China  with its massive military built up in South China Sea will aggressively confront US to dictate terms to bring North Korea for the resumption of six-party talks.

Meanwhile, China is opposing unilateral sanctions on North Korea outside the framework of Security Council resolutions.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula reached a high level in 2015 when Pyongyang conducted two nuclear tests and a string of ballistic missile launches and as a response South Korea is about to complete the deployment of an advanced US missile defense system by May 2017. The tensions will further rise as Russia, China and North Korea termed the action of US  and Seoul as provocative. But Park Geun-hye impeachment has created political uncertainty in South Korea.

If Trump is thinking of having normal ties with Russia  and using Moscow card to browbeat China then he is bound to fail as because Russia-China ties are far deeper than US-Russia understanding though Putin had in someway helped Trump win the US Presidential elections.

Admiral Harry Harris, head of the US Pacific Command ,warned China that Washington would not accept Chinese control of the South China Sea, despite Beijing’s having undertaken rapid development of artificial islands capable of hosting military planes.

Harris further added “We will cooperate where we can but we will be ready to confront where we must and the US fought its first war following our independence to ensure freedom of navigation”.

Trump may have to tackle China by involving countries having ties with both the countries and will have to take into confidence his own intelligence agencies, especially the CIA as well as moderate Republican  and Democratic members of Congress.

Nuclear Testing

America comes forward to support S Korea against N Korea

The North Korea has done its fifth nuclear test and the whole World has united against it which is a good move and recently United States and China have also agreed to deploy an additional THAAD battery in South Korea after the threat from North Korea.

The United States President Barack Obama has taken this threat seriously and House Press Secretary, Josh Earnest said that he is committed to protect Americans. He further told that the Security Council told him over the weekend that indicated that they were going to consider additional economic sanctions which could be imposed against North Korea for their continued and flagrant violations of a variety of Security Council resolutions.

This statement of Josh has cleared that America is very serious about this matter and whole International Community has come forward  to stand against North Korea because this is an alarming situation and if Countries will not take it seriously then North Korea can do anything to exploit its nuclear power.

America is also working on further steps which will isolate North Korea and Josh also told that there is some important work to be done at the UN and the US will be supportive in that process. There is THAAD battery that has been deployed to Guam.

Recently America and South Korea has done an agreement in which it was decided that an additional THAAD battery in South Korea will be deployed and all of this has been oriented against the threat from North Korea.

Barack Obama also told that he is pleased with Chinese because they have contributed in constructing a pressure on North Koreans and he believes that there is more that they could do in this situation.

Obama also had various conversations with Chinese President Xi (Jinping), about the need to deal with this situation a priority.
