In order to curb traffic congestion and ensure the smooth flow of vehicles across the city in the new year, the Mumbai traffic police has drawn up a priority list of around 120 locations in the city and said it will be monitoring these closely. The locations were shortlisted after a detailed survey conducted by the traffic department.

The police has claimed that if the proposed strategies can be adopted and implemented properly, the city can be rid of bottlenecks, despite ongoing construction activities like he Metro project, which have contributed significantly to traffic disruptions.

Traffic police officials said the locations shortlisted include notoriously traffic prone junctions like the Cadbury junction in Mahalaxmi, Haji Ali, Kings Circle, Hindmata, Bandra Kurla Complex, Santacruz Chembur Link Road, Dr Ambedkar Chowk, JJ Junction, Bandra Worli sea-link, LBS Marg, Dharavi T-junction, etc. Main checkpoints like the Dahisar toll naka and the Mulund check naka are also on the list.

Police officials said that in case they notice traffic getting delayed frequently at any of these locations, a senior traffic official will be deployed to restore the movement of traffic.

“Identification and monitoring of the congestion points is one of many initiatives taken up by the traffic police. Even during the festive season, prior notices are issued out to brief the locals where to ply their vehicles and where not. There are many trial and error attempts that take place while experimenting new techniques. Sometimes, when we put up a barricade to divert traffic, it does not work out well and eventually we remove the barricades from that spot. The traffic police is increasingly coming up with new plans to control vehicular traffic, and recent results are examples of success where the target is achieved with positive public response,” said joint commissioner of police (traffic), Amitesh Kumar.
