Extremely hated by the hindu zealots and infamous as Mulla Mulayam during the Ayodhya movement of the nineties when he ordered firing on the Hindu Kar Sewaks marching in myriad numbers towards the Babri mosque killing 28 and injuring many Samajwadi Party supremo and former chief minister UP Mulayam Singh Yadav has no remorse for issuing firing directives but says that his governmeny was committed to protecting the 16th century Babri Mosque in order to preserve the nation’s unity and integrity.
He added: I had to protect the confidence of the minorities in the country’s constititon. But finally puts the blame on the paramilitary, the central reserve security force for losing their cool after the karsewaks burnt their tents in which a trooper died. It was only after this that the CRPF got immensely furious and went berserk killing total 28 Kar sewaks with sixteen dying on the spot. He said that he had direct arguments with the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who exaggerated the figure of dead kar sewaks to 56 instead of 28. On the 25th anniversary of Babri Masjid Mulayam Singh Yadav while speaking to media persons separately, pronounced prime minister Narendra Modi as an intelligent man and the one who can find the solution to this vexed issue if he really wishes to do so. Known for his over appeasement of minorities and tremendously revered by them, octogenerian Mulayam Singh Yadav whose samajwadi party lost to BJP in the state legislative elections just eight months ago said that he held several secretive meetings with VHP leaders and the Sunni Vaqf Board earlier and had placed a formula of construction of Ram Mandir adjacent to the disputed site pending the Apex court’s judgement thus not touching the disputed site and keeping the minorities happy as well.
He says: my suggestion was, the Hindus could built another temple later at the site if the court permits and mosque by the minorities. What’s wrong. This would satisfy all sections of the society. Though agreed by all, earlier, it could’nt finally materialise. Believing in the funal judgement of the supreme court in this context Mulayam Singh says that if an amicable out of court settlement arrives, he would welcome it. He says, he is today the most unacceptable person in the context of Babri masjid Ram temple imbroglio as neither side is prepared to listen to me. Had it been not the case I would have genuinely proceeded ahead to resolve this vexed imbroglio, adds Mulayam Singh Yadav.
It may be recalled that considered to be the most popular leader of minorities of the country Mulayam Singh Yadav came into heated controversy in the year nineteen ninety when he in his capacity of the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh ordered the firing on the myriad number of kar sewaks marching towards the Babri Masjid site killing 28 on the spot though the figure as per the VHP and BJP was 56, strongly refuted by Yadav. A CRPF jawan was also killed during this fiasco.
While he was strongly condemned by the majority community all over the globe Mulayam was hailed by the minorities in India as as well as the muslim world then for protecting the Babri Masjid at the cost of 28 killings. It was after two years when the BJP chief minister Kalyan Singh was on the power saddle in UP the Babri Masjid was demolished changing the course of history of Indian politics and converting the BJP from the strength of 2 MPs to a resounding success with AB Vajpayee becoming the prime minoster of the country with the support of the NDA partners and placing the Ram temple issue on the back burner. As the Congress party stands for secular values unstintedly so is Mulayam Singh serious about the minorities of the state and the country.
He had even once in his parliamentary speech has advocated for making of a federation of the muslim states involving Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and other muslim countries creating a furore in the parliament especially when the neighbouring country is sneaking hard core terrorists in J&K and other parts of India creating havoc by killing innocents in large numbers. The term Mulla Mulayam was allegedly given to him by his arch political detractors BJP and various hindu outfits like VHP and Bajrang Dal etc after he ordered firing on the Kar Sewaks in the nineties safeguarding the Babri Masjid and the interests of the minoritirs of the state, which Mr Singh termed as utmostly essential in view of protecting the communal fabric of the country.
