Dual Channel ABS: What, Why and How?

A new safety regulation applied last year highlighted the importance of Dual Channel ABS again. But what exactly are these and why are they so important? That’s what this write-up is about. Let’s go –

WHAT?

ABS means Anti-Lock Breaking System. It is used to avoid skidding when you press the breaks hard or abruptly, no matter what type of road you are traveling on.

There are two types of ABS- single channel and dual channel. In Single Channel ABS, only the front wheel is equipped with the ABS unit. On the other hand, as its name suggests, Dual Channel ABS cover both the wheels- front and rear. While single-channel ABS is enough for low-power bikes around 150 cc, if you have high capacity two-wheeler, it’s better to go for Dual Channel ABS. which brings us to the…

WHY?

Dual-Channel ABS is more effective than the single-channel one. It is not only more effective and also safer as it provides for both the wheels. It is helpful in abating accidents involving two-wheelers.

HOW?

Okay, now things can get a bit difficult if you never studied physics properly but here is how the Dual Channel ABS actually works –

In this mechanism, both the front and rear wheels have ABS rings with an actuator controlled by a sensor. This actuator (or simply mover) is what controls the brakes. There is a control unit placed under the seat too.

The wheels are constantly monitored by the sensors (with the help of ABS rings). When brakes are applied, it is identified by the sensors and the control unit makes sure that maximum braking force is applied and the vehicle stops without the wheels locking up (as they typically would) and thus no skidding or losing control. We tried to simplify the mechanism so we didn’t include jargons but if you want to know, the actual terms used were ECU, Pumps, Valve and Hydraulic Brakes and Hydraulic Pressure.

Don’t worry if you don’t get it (me neither) because all you need to know is that Dual Channel ABS are indeed safer since, as we already mentioned, it works simultaneously for both the wheels and avoids slipping and wheel lifting, thus fewer accidents.
