JUST four days after the point blank range despicable murder of a hard core RSS volunteer Ravindra Gosain in Ludhiana, Punjab, another shocking incident of a brutal murder of a RSS activist and a journalist shot at frompoint blank range, may be a stringer with Dainik Jagran, a popular hindi daily of Uttar Pradesh, namely Rajesh Mishra  early morning 7.15 am at village Brahmpura in Ghazipur district has come to light as being reported by news feeds and agencies.

The bike borne miscreants supposed to have between identified by the police, pumped six bullets on the deceased Rajesh Mishra and killed him brutally on the spot leaving behind a wave of terror and sensitivity. The deceased’s brother who was also present at the building material shop owned by them at the time of the incident, was also injured . The police says that this may be the case of a personal enmity and the murderors would be in the police net shortly as they have been identified. The incident of this broad day light killing sent shock wave across Ghaziur and  UP where killings have become the order of the day despite umpteen claims by the Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath of making the largest state of the country crime free. Just four days ago in a same fashion three bike borne criminals killed a renowned RSS volunteer in Ludhiana, Punjab.

Few days ago the BJP chief Amit Shah was in Kerala on the ocassion of the finishing leg of BJP’s Jan Raksha Yatra blaming the ruling CPM government of the southern state for alleged engineering the killings of RSS workers. It may be recalled that during the last two months about five journalists have been killed in various parts of the country namely Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru, KP Singh in Amritsar, Punjab, Mishra in Bihar, Shantanu Bhowmik in Tripura and now Rajesh Mishra in Ghazipur. During the last decade about 75 journalists have been killed in various parts of the country and more than 140 injured with the police and law enforcing agencies literally doing nothing to bring the culprits to justice.

Journalists from all over the country have gathered in New Delhi and various state capitals of the country on 2nd October on Gandhi Jayanti and formed human chains to protest against the killings of scribes and also handed over the memorandum to the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The government of Punjab declared the monetary compensation of Rupees five lakhs for the family of the deceased and assured a job for a family member of late Gusain.

On the day of Gandhi Jayanti, 2nd October the Press Club of India of which I am too a member, is organisising a protest demonstration and a forming a human chain to register the opposition of the entire media fraternity and right thinking people towards the recent obnoxious and anguishing incidents of despicable murders of journalists across the country.

The protest demonstration of the entire mediaPCI TO FORM HUMAN CHAIN AGAINST LYNCHING OF JOURNALISTS ON GANDHI JAYANTI 2ND OCT fraternity of Delhi in which various media organisations and its members would participate would take place at the Press Club of India precincts, Raisina Road at 1.PM sharp to be addressed by senior veteran journalists and important figures of the media fraternity. The PCI has always been in the forefront to always take the lead in registering its protest and opposition in matters pertaining to unfortunate killings and attack on journalists and demanding immediateand forthright penalisation of the culprits.

It has recently been the very first responsible organisation to convene the protest meeting at the PCI precints to register its condemnation on the arbitrary CBI raids on the NDTV premises all over the country compounded with a large attended protest meeting against the brutal murders of outspoken progressive journalists Gauri Lankesh of Bengaluru and Shantanu Bhowmick demanding expeditious action in bringing the obnoxious culprits to justice. 2nd October’s protest demonstration and formation of the human chain is a continuous exercise to keep the state and central governments aware and mobilised about their negligence and ignorance in not securing the lives of journalists nationally.

It really disturbing and shocking to note that during the last ten years amongst the 70 working journalists who have been killed while on line of duty, except a very negligible few none of the culprits have been brought to justice despite tall claims of the successive governments at the state and the centre. In addition to these protest demonstrations it organises seminars and discussions on issues of national significance anf matters pertaing to media freedom and rights. Programmes pertaining to book releases and lectures of various foreign dignitories on Indo foreign relations are also organised from time to time. The Press Club of India also organises obituaries of its veteran member journalists and honour the veteran journalists from time to time. The PCI’s standing in solidarity gesture with journalists in distress is always laudable.

Uttarakhand Journalists forum demands a CBI inquiry in all these murders and adequate financial compensation to the bereaved families.

A question is boggling my mind again and again. Let me tell you honestly that I had not heard about Gauri Lankesh earlier nor was being aware of her popularity as an anti communalist journalist and a trenchant opponent of fundamentalist fanatics. What makes me disturbed is the fact as to how come in a democratic country anyone can kill a women journalist in a cold blood for being outspoken and crusader against orthodox conventions and religious fanaticism.

According to the available statistics of,”India Spend,” seventy journalists have been killed from 1992 to 2016 and more than 140 physically thrashed or attacked in a two years’ time till 2015. Just two days after Gauri Lankesh’s gruesome murder and national outrage a journalist in Bihar’s Arwal district was shot at by two motorcycle borne criminals, injuring him grievously, who also looted him of Rupees one lakh in cash which he had withdrawn from the bank at that point of time. In an infamous Vyapan scam of Madhya Pradesh last year, a journalist of a leading news channel was also killed clandestinely while he was investigating the story of this multi-crore scam. Rajiv Ranjan, a brave, fearless and courageous journalist who worked for a leading Hindi daily of Bihar was also hacked to death while he exposed the mafia don n politician of Bihar Shahabbudin, now in Tihar Jail. Gauri’ s diabolical murder also reminds me of the brutal lynching of Umesh Dobhal, a popular journalist of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand during the eighties, who was the victim of the highly influential liquor mafia, operating in Garhwal, Uttarakhand during the eighties. Umesh Dobhal worked for Amar Ujala as its Garhwal based special correspondent then and exposed the liquor mafia by exposing their illegal acts and scandals.

There was tremendous protest all around and the culprits were brought to justice by the CBI, though they got killed later on in a gang shoot out. But there is a difference between the cold blooded murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh and majority of the journalists killed in their line of duty. While the killers of the journalists are all criminals but the reason for the killing seems to be different. While journalists like Rajiv Ranjan and Umesh Dobhal became the victims of hard core criminals for exposing their ill designs and criminal acts, progressive journalists like Gauri Lankesh, writers, thinkers like Dabolkar, Kulbargi, Pansare, and others were hacked to death because of their being the victim of fundamentalist fanaticism, religious chauvinists, and bigots. Gauri Lankesh was the relentless fighter and a trenchant and vociferous opponent of superstitious beliefs, conventions, fundamentalist fanatics and blind propagators of communal flare-ups in the society and had been exposing them through her articles, writings, and news reports thus having become the KIRKIRI in the eyes of the powers that be, and those horribly provoking, aiding and  abetting these divisive and reactionary forces n tendencies.

The entire media fraternity, the intellectual community, the women and the commoners of the country came forward in large numbers to protest and the print, as well as electronic media too, have contributed tremendously by covering her despicable murder. This undisputed unity has compelled the state and central governments to concentrate their best efforts to nail the culprits who are unfortunately still at large. The murder of Gauri has sent shock waves in the entire journalistic fraternity of the country, particularly for those who expose the ill conceived designs and notions of the criminals, mafias, and politicians who are clandestinely in collaboration with these elements. In the despicable murder of trenchant opposer of fundamentalism, communalists, religious fanatics, and bigotry while the progressive society has lost a valiant ideological fighter those on the path of following the ideals of Gauri Lankesh and the likes would have to be more careful of their safety and security.

There was a time, a decade ago when journalists had full guarantee of their lives’ safety and security despite their being extremely outspoken, anti establishment and against the political and principled ideology of their opponents but in a decade or so physical attacks on journalists have increased manifold and if the latest statistics of India Spend and the barbaric murder of woman journalist Gauri Lankesh is taken into consideration, it seems that free speech and press freedom in India is terrible and shockingly at stake and vocal and outspoken journalists’ life is at God’s mercy. God save the humanity.

The most dastardly act of the gruesome murder of a women journalist and a committed social activist fighting courageously for rights of the women and down trodden and equally countering the communal and divisive tendencies has resulted in an all round condemnation and expression of furious dissent against the forces that be, by journalists, intellectuals, socio political organisations, youths, students and women nationally. Such a dastardly act of a diabolical murder in a row has while made everybody in the country sad, anguished and utterly shocked  there are still people with chauvinistic bent of mind who are shamelessly planting fake and biased news terming the deceased woman journalist as an extortionist, biased and even vindicating the horrendous act,  for her actions of opposing the forces of religious fundamentalists and bigotry.

Instead of expressing their tributes for the departed soul as a normal human being, these disgruntled elements are rather misusing the social networking sites to ferociously and erroneously counter those speaking in favor or expressing solidarity or sympathy with the victim journalist, her cause, ideology or writings. The point is, can a voice of dissent in a free democracy be scuttled or smothered by gun ? Does our constitution or the law permit anybody to kill those who represent ideology or writing against some other thought or VICHARDHARA. Is such killing of a progressive journalist who’s against fake news, against forces of division, reaction and fanaticism or who democratically oppose a system,  permissible in the country of Gandhi and Lord Budha , the father of the nation and apostles of peace.

If fundamentalism, chauvinism or bigotry is not responsible for such dastardly actions of shocking trails of murders in a row then why is it that only Dabolkar, Kulbargi, Pansare and Gauri Lankesh are murdured with guns from point blank range and why is it that the culprits are not caught ever after several years of investigation? asks script writer Saleem Javed in a tweet without naming them. Here, why so much of fuss is being created by planting so much  highly objectionable news against the deceased journalist who died in cold blood just because she was a vociferous and eloquent opposer of orthodox practices, communalism and religious fanaticism. These dissenters of her say she was a leftist and a progressive and therefore opposed to the right wing politics but then should it mean that she should be killed brutally and that those standing with her family and ideology are traitors, extortionist,   anti national and bad people even if they are well read, well educated, patriotic and respectable people of the country. The fact of the matter is killing of any human being whether he or she is from right, left, center or free thinking ideology is highly condemnable and should be unitedly opposed as the criminal or the murderers never represent any thought or ideology. We should respect human beings n their existence first and any physical assault, violence or killing is totally unacceptable in a civilized society. Even the prime minister Narendra Modi has come out heavily and strongly against the shocking incidents of lynchings in various parts of the country and had warned of severe action against the perpetrators. He has out-rightly condemned violence in the name of faith in the land of Gandhi and Budha.

The various political parties of the country should give up giving political color to such dastardly killings and instead work for the expeditious arrest of the hardened criminals so that they can be tried severely under the strictest sections of the law. It’s anguishing and disturbing to note that India has till now witnessed 66 RTI activists having been killed in various parts of the country with five committing suicides. The trend of killing still goes on. Meanwhile after the planting of highly objectionable tweets, even expressing pleasure over the sad demise of journalist Gauri Lankesh the authorities concerned have warned of seizing the twitter accounts of such ruthless users. The way Gauri’s death invited national outrage, after the mind boggling Nirbhaya episode, it’s for sure that her untimely death will inspire many many more to follow her footsteps.
