In Hinduism, Shivling represents Lord Shiva, the supreme of all deities. According to some schools of thought, Shivling establishes the trinity principle that represents Brahma the creator (the base), Vishnu the protector (the middle) and Shiva the destroyer (the apex) all in one idol. However, another school of thought believes that Linga represents the Brahmanda (the cosmic egg) and signifies that the creation is impacted by the union of Prakriti and Purusha, the male and the female powers of Nature. It also signifies Satya (Truth), Jnana (Knowledge) and Ananta (Infinity).

There are many superstitions, beliefs and rational practices are found in the society. One among all the beliefs is the idea of NOT to keep Shivling at home. Let’s investigate and know the rationale behind such thought.

Reason-1

The theory of Hinduism holds stringent disciplinary codes for women during the menstruation periods. One of the notions that preclude keeping Shivling at homes is the fear that menstruating women might desecrate purity and sanctity of the idol which might invite the wrath of Lord Shiva.

Reason-2

The Hinduism concept believes in Nitya Pujas or daily and regular worship to divine idols, especially Shivling. Therefore, some concepts state that since Shivling represents Shiva, the destroyer, it might invite the wrath of the supreme God, if daily rituals are not performed.

Reason-3

It is also considered that Lord Shiva is the god of perfection and will not bear any mistakes, lies, violating acts and other flaws at home. Due to this reason, it is feared that Shivling at home can give room for several ritual misconducts that might invite the Lord’s fury.

Conclusion

In the modern time, it is rather imprudent to believe something can desecrate divinity. However, as a mark of respect to the sanctity of the idol and Hinduism, people can be more careful while performing daily rituals at home. Further, it is recommended to avoid big idol (more than one foot) at home and advised to do the Pratishta or installation of the idol in one place and then perform the daily pujas diligently and sincerely on regular basis to get Lord Shiva’s mercy and blessings.
