Do you ever sit back and wonder where did all of this come from? Even though the origin of life still remains a mystery that we have to solve, we do have a pretty good idea of how our societies developed.
There are, according to historians, some locations called cradles of civilization, which have been the first documented places of ‘urban’ life – cities, construction, division of labor, municipalities, and yes, a colorful population to inhabit it all.
What’s the most fascinating part about these cradles of civilization is that they emerged independently. This means that despite being separated by time and space, people have always banded together and built things. So, let’s explore some of these ancient civilizations and their impact on the world.
1. The Indus Valley

The Indus Valley
The first civilization on the list is also the most mysterious. Discovered in the early 1800s, the Indus Valley civilization existed about five thousand years ago, in the north-west stretch of land that today belongs to India and Pakistan.
The cities of the Indus valley were noted for their urban planning, with meticulously laid out houses at right angles, covered drains, large reservoirs of water, and clusters of large, non-residential buildings.
Thousands of incredible artefacts have been excavated from the Indus Valley, including toys, figurines, and evidence of trade with other distance civilizations, such as Mesopotamia.
Frustratingly however, the language used by the Indus Valley has not been deciphered. Over 600 hundred symbols have been found from their sites, but there is no way of understanding what they mean, yet. Indeed, it is not even known if this is a proper ‘language’, or more of symbols used to communicate ideas.
Nevertheless, scientists and historians continue to work tirelessly to unlock the secrets of this fascinating part that is a part of the world’s cradles of civilization.
2. Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt
The incredible impact that the ancient Egypt civilization has had on the world is hard to encapsulate.
When Cleopatra, the most well-known of Egyptian rulers came to the throne, the Egyptian culture was already thousands of years old. Unlike the Indus Valley, the Egyptian language of hieroglyphics has been deciphered, and thus we have an unprecedented look into this civilization.
The ancient Egyptian culture is well noted for its mythology, its stunning and gravity-defying architecture, its wealth, and its advances in science. Egyptians had harnessed the power of the Nile river to provide them stable food supply in the desert, and were among the first to develop a writing system, contemporary to the Indus Valley.
Its pioneering works includes those in math, building, medication, and bureaucracy. Even today, the impact of and fascination for ancient Egyptian culture can be found all around the world, and there is no wondering why it is one of the cradles of civilization.
3. Mesopotamia

Mesopotamia
Even before Egypt existed, there was Mesopotamia bustling right above it. The Mesopotamian civilization is believed to be the earliest in the world. This doesn’t mean that there were no ‘communities’ before this.
However, Mesopotamia has been the first site where we have evidence of civilization as it is understood today – farming, non-nomadic peoples, and a city culture. The city invented most of the things that have brought humanity to modernity, including the wheel, planting of crops, math, astronomy, and writing.
The culture was in particular noted for its literature and bureaucracy, since these were the first to emerge in the world. The Epic of Gilgamesh is noted as one of the earliest pieces of mythology.
Mesopotamia eventually fell into different hands following various conquests, including the Romans, the Parthians, and eventually the Muslims. However, the impact of this site, which is one of the cradles of civilization is still visible in the culture of its conquerors.
4. Ancient China

Ancient China
Separated by the mighty Himalayas, Indus Valley and China were near contemporaries. Though China has been continuously inhabited for millennia, its civilizational period begins with the Erlitou period, which some believe is the legendary Xia Dynasty. This Xia dynasty is noted as the first dynasty of Chinese historiography.
It is the cutting off point between mythology and civilization, where the rule of China passed from deities to humans.
The Chinese cradles of civilization developed around the Yellow River, and were noted for their highly efficient bureaucratic system, philosophy, literature, and the world’s first known exams for state jobs, which were notoriously difficult.
Though the different kingdoms and states of China often fought each other, there was significant cultural development during this time which defined China for centuries to come.
Today, the history of China is preserved in some of the most extensive documentations of civilization, and countless artefacts that are revered around the world for their craftsmanship. Chinese philosophy is also known for its deep influence on both eastern and western ways of thinking.
All these ancient cradles of civilization are an incredible reminder of just how deep human history is, and how amazing our journey has been from planting crops to exploring space.
