Indian boxing star M C Mary Kom says her decision to skip the Asian Championships is part of a larger plan to enhance her chances of Olympic qualification at a time when the competition in her weight category has become significantly “difficult”.

Mary Kom, who claimed her sixth world title last year in Delhi, will be looking to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the World Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The Asian Championship is scheduled to be held next month in Thailand.

“This year is very important for me. Qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics is my main aim. Without competing in any competition I cannot qualify for the Olympics. It would be difficult. I have to know all the opponents in my category (51kg) and judge how strong they are compared to me,” Mary Kom, who has signed up with the sports goods manufacturing giant ‘PUMA’, told PTI in New Delhi.

“I have to first compete in the India Open and then slowly choose my tournaments in the 51kg category. I am looking to qualify for the Olympics at the Worlds and that is why I have decided to skip the Asian Championships to prepare myself best for the Worlds.

“Without proper planning I cannot qualify for the Olympics. India Open is also very important for me. So I have decided to choose some important tournaments to qualify for the Olympics,” added the 2012 London Olympics bronze-medallist, The 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships will be held from September 7 to 21.

Mary Kom would be competing in the 51kg category after her preferred 48kg divisions did not make the Olympic programme. The Manipuri had competed in the 51kg category in Germany during a training stint earlier this month and came back undefeated.

“I have already been competing in the 51kg category in the last one year. I now know the areas where I will have to work upon but fitness wise there are no issues. I just have to work upon my strength, power and stamina,” she said.

Asked about her plans after she decides to hang her gloves, the 36-year-old mother of three said she wants to give back to the sport which made her a household name.

“That is something which was always in my plans. But right now I am concentrating on my upcoming competitions. I have my own academy in Manipur. I have that passion for full-time coaching after retirement,” she said.

“If the Boxing Federation of India or the government needs my services in improving the standards of Indian women’s boxing, I am always there.”

Mary Kom is gearing up for the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s World Championship, which will take place in New Delhi in two weeks’ time.

Under the monitoring of Italian Coach Raffaele Bergamasco, Mary is aiming to clinch her sixth gold medal, participating in the seven World Boxing Championships.

Mary’s international success started with a silver medal in Pennsylvania, the US in 2001, when the women’s World Championships were organised for the first time and the first time those were held in India, she bagged the gold medal in the category of 46Kg.

Although she claims to not remember her first medal in 2001, she says she vividly remembers her first of her five gold medals which she had won in Antalya in 2002.

Speaking to a national media, India’s Olympic-medallist-boxer says she does not believe in looking back and instead she would like to focus in the upcoming tournaments. Right now she is busy studying her opponents, thinking ahead and wants to create new memories.

“Maybe, I will have a new memory to share after this. I love all my medals and I will try to get a 6th World Championships gold here.

I am competing in World Championships in my category (48kg) after a long time. That is an advantage. I won gold in 2006 here in front of the home crowd and this time too I want to gift gold to my country. I will try my best,” the five-time Worlds gold medallist said.

“I am still working on aspects of my game. I have won all the medals but still feel there is something missing. I want to increase my speed, my power. I am always working on my game. That comes from inside. Nobody can teach you.

Every boxer is strong today. They are young. Skill wise, technically they might be weak but they have energy. I can’t afford to relax against them. You have to use your intelligence in every match. Once I know my opponent, I have to plan and play accordingly. That’s my game,” she added.

Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor, the biggest ever Boxing match. The hustle is getting wild as the notorious boy- Conor McGregor has challenged the American Boxer for a million dollar Boxing Match with a record holding win streak of 49-0 by none other than Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Later this month, the once-retired all-time great boxer Mayweather will take on UFC’s big dog Conor McGregor in Las Vegas.

The fight is happening on Saturday 26 August. While the times haven’t been announced, The bout will be housed in the T-Mobile arena on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. The venue has held major fights in the past, including UFC 202, in which Mc Gregor beat Diaz on points.

Fighting records:

Mayweather retired in 2015 with an unblemished 49-0 professional boxing record.

He is widely regarded as one of the best defensive fighters ever, and prides himself on his ability to evade punishment with his skillful movement about the ring while making adjustments against opponents on the fly.

A win for Mayweather would move him ahead of former heavyweight great Rocky Marciano, who also retired with a perfect 49-0 career record.

McGregor, the UFC’s reigning lightweight champion and former featherweight champion, is known as much for his bravado as for his explosive knockout power inside an MMA octagon.

What are the rules of the fight?

The fight will be held under boxing rules, presenting a huge challenge for mixed martial artists McGregor as he faces off against one of the greatest defensive boxers in history.

Adding to McGregor’s challenge, the fighters will be using 10-ounce boxing gloves instead of the smaller UFC gloves and he will not be allowed to use the leg kicks or takedowns that are used in mixed martial arts.

It will be a big take down this month, a horrific display of blood and sweat expected.
