To think about the violence of Partition, is to question the very legitimacy of Pakistan.

According to Gandhi, European ideas can produce violence in attempts to recover past glories. In Pakistan, Partition has only become a publicly debated issue quite recently. To think about the violence of Partition for them, is to question the very legitimacy of the state.

Gandhi was right when he said that no peace between the two is possible until all those who had been driven away are given rights to return and compensation for their losses of life and property.

Gandhi and Jinnah had relied upon communal allegiances, to hold the country together. It was not trust in each other that allowed Indian and Pakistani leaders to agree to Partition, but the famous ‘hostage’ theory, according to which a Hindu or Muslim minority in one country guaranteed the good treatment of its fellows in the other.

It has always been the lack of concern of the citizens of each country for the other, that has kept India and Pakistan united. The imperial character of these diverse societies has kept them united, the mutual relations of citizens of each country defined neither by love nor hatred but indifference.

Hate generates from identity politics.

Hate crimes are higher in South Asia than any other region of the world. Such crimes generate from the identity politics that enforce behaviour based on religious values. A state when allows the mob to dictate its goals, it is responding to identity politics. This results in holding back economic and social progress.

India’s situation is far more complex than any other country, due to its diversity. U.P matches the size of France and Germany combined together. Still, it is the most backward state of India in terms of human development. The reason for this could be U.P. being under the control of three different political parties during the last three decades, all indulging in some form of identity politics.

In the South Asian region with their diverse populations, identity politics stands in the way of economic progress. According to Plato peace can only be assured, if rulers were philosophers and a philosopher was the king.

South Asian region can only flourish when hate is quelled, because even if the hate is not aimed at us we cannot escape its consequence.
