Muzaffarpur Police has lodged an FIR against actors Anupam Kher, Akshaye Khanna and 12 others on a district court’s direction in connection with the movie The Accidental Prime Minister.

The FIR was lodged at the Kanti police station on Tuesday after the court took objection to non-compliance of its January 8 order in this regard.

Kher, Khanna and 12 others named in the FIR are associated with the movie The Accidental Prime Minister based on the tenure of former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

The court had on January 8 ordered police to lodge an FIR against the actors and 12 others on a complaint filed by advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha with a plea that the movie presented Manmohan Singh and a number of other public figures in a bad light.

Ojha said he had moved the court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Saba Alam on February 4 to mention that its order was not complied with by the police.

“On this, the court issued a show-cause notice to Kanti police station through the Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police after which police lodged an FIR yesterday (Tuesday),” Ojha told reporters Wednesday.

When contacted, Senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar said after the matter came to his cognizance, he ordered the police station to comply with the court’s order.

Police have lodged the FIR under IPC sections 295, 153, 153A, 293, 504, 506, 120B and 34 which relate to promoting enmity among different groups, the sale of obscene objects, insult with intent to provoke breach of peace and criminal conspiracy etc.

In his complaint, Ojha named Kher (who plays the character of Manmohan Singh), as well as Akshaye Khanna, who plays the role Singh’s media adviser Sanjaya Baru, on whose book the movie is said to be based upon.

Others named in the complaint include actors depicting the roles of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress president (then national general secretary) Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his deputy Lal Krishna Advani and RJD leader Lalu Prasad.

The producer, director and other key persons associated with the film were also named in the complaint.

The complainant had alleged that he felt hurt upon watching the promos of the movie, which was not released at that time, wherein the public figures were portrayed in a manner that projected a poor image of the country.

The movie was released on January 11, 2019.

The government Tuesday introduced a bill in Rajya Sabha to amend the Cinematograph Act and impose strict penalty to combat the menace of film piracy. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore introduced the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Upper House.
The Bill seeks to amend provisions of Cinematograph Act, 1952, in order to tackle film piracy by including penal provisions for unauthorised camcording and duplication of films. To check piracy, particularly the release of pirated versions of films on the internet which causes huge losses to the film industry and the exchequer, the bill proposes to make film piracy offences punishable with imprisonment of up to three years and fines that may extend to Rs 10 lakh or both.
The proposed amendment states that any person, who without the written authorisation of the copyright owner, uses any recording device to make or transmit a copy of a film, or attempts to do so, or abet the making or transmission of such a copy, will be liable for such a punishment.

The Cabinet last week had approved the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s proposal for introducing the bill. The proposed amendments would increase industry revenues, boost job creation, fulfil important objectives of India’s National Intellectual Property policy and will give relief against piracy and infringing content online, an official statement had said.
The film industry has been demanding for a long time that the government consider amendments to the law preventing camcording and piracy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made an announcement at the inaugural function of the National Museum of Indian Cinema at Mumbai on January 19, 2019, to tackle the menace of camcording and piracy.

Filmmaker Siddharth Chauhan was up for shock when he got to know that IIT Bombay has cancelled the screening of his film Pashi. Those handling the event told Siddharth that they couldn’t screen his film due to ‘explicit content’. This has left the filmmaker in a state of whammy.

Siddharth had taken to social media (Facebook) to express his anger. He was particularly upset since the movie’s screening was cancelled last-minute, especially citing ‘explicit conent’, which according to him, does not exist in the film. Pashiwas supposed to be screened on Saturday and Sunday.

“They didn’t even bother to tell me that they had decided against screening my film. Initially they kept calling me with the request to screen my film. I also signed a screening agreement with them last month. After that I did not hear from them. The day before the festival was to start I asked them which of the two days my film would be screened and that’s when they told me they would not be screening it,” Chauhan told Mumbai Mirror.

“There is no frontal nudity in the film. There’s just one dream sequence in which a naked man is walking from a distance and one love making scene with only first half of the bodies are in the nude. There is nothing objectionable in it. After I expressed my displeasure to them they said the festival was for all and children would be part of it. But that’s what they said later,” he added.

Siddharth Chauhan is an independent filmmaker who is based in Shimla. His movie, which tells the story of the desires and fantasies of a teenage boy in Himachal Pradesh, was screened at Delhi University previously

WWE star The Great Khali is all set to make his debut in Telugu cinema. The wrestling champion has signed up to play a key role in Theenmaar director Jayanth C. Paranji’s upcoming feature film titled Narendra.

Touted to be an intense drama that will be filmed on the backdrop of India-Pakistan relations, the film will have Nilesh Eti and Izabelle Leiti in the leads. A sports drama with boxing as the main theme of the story, the movie is presently being filmed in Hyderabad. It was apparently a very easy task to convince the 46-year-old Dalip Singh Rana aka The Great Khali to be a part of the film, since he felt the role was tailor made for him, informs a source.
