Following Christchurch mosque attack Australian PM pushes G20 to tackle internet extremism

Published

on

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called on world leaders to press technology firms to tackle the “ungoverned” space of extremist internet content in the wake of the Christchurch terror attack.

In a letter published Tuesday, the Australian leader asked the G20 summit host, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, that the issue is raised when leaders gather in Osaka this June.

Morrison is in the middle of a tough re-election campaign, where his party has faced persistent allegations of fuelling anti-migrant sentiment to appeal to conservative voters.

Morrison has spoken publicly several times to denounce extremism since the attack that killed 50 people in neighbouring New Zealand on Friday.

He has also taken aim at tech companies for their seeming inability to stop the propagation of extremist content, such as live footage shot by the gunman as he rampaged through the Al Noor mosque.

“They’ve created these capabilities, and in the overwhelming majority of cases, they’re available for peaceful and happy purposes, but we do know that they can be used and weaponised by terrorists of any description,” he told the press.

“If you can write an algorithm to make sure that the ads they want you to see can appear on your mobile phone, then I’m quite confident they can write an algorithm to screen out hate content on social media platforms,” Scott Morrison said.

“I’m sure we can work together to make sure they protect our citizens by ensuring that the tools that they have developed are not used by terrorists as weapons to advance their agendas of hate,” he added.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten backed that call, telling social media platforms, “If you help create the swamp, you can’t go missing when evil things start crawling out of it.”

The actor is now set to essay the role of Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, who was in charge of the Bhuj airport during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. It was Karnik and his team, with the help of the local women, who reconstructed the destroyed Indian Air Force airstrip at Bhuj in Gujarat, in what could be termed as India’s ‘Pearl Harbour’ moment. The movie, based on a true incident, is touted to be one of India’s most fascinating war-related stories.

Talking about the film, producer Bhushan Kumar told Times Of India, “This courageous tale needs to be told because we want the current and the coming generation to know about this brave soldier, Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, who played a significant role in India’s victory in the 1971 war. He was heroic enough to take this bold step of involving civilians in a war. Also, who better than Ajay Devgn for the role of Vijay Karnik? We are working with him currently in De De Pyaar De and Taanaji, and we are glad that he is on board for this film, too.”

Vijay Karnik also seemed happy to have Ajay Devgn on board to tell his tale. He told the publication, “We were fighting a war and if there had been any casualties of any of these women, it would have been a great loss. But I took the decision and it worked out. I had briefed them where they could take shelter if attacked and they followed it bravely. Also, I could only see Ajay Devgn essaying my character and I’m glad that he’s on board.”

Copyright tussle between ‘In The Name of God’ and ‘Laddoo’

Published

on

The controversy between the short films —Laddoo and In The Name Of God — based on a similar storyline continues. One thought the tussle ended after Neeraj Pandey and Shital Bhatia’s Friday Filmworks, which presented the Sameer Sadhwani and Kishore Sadhwani-directed Laddoo, revealed that writer Pankaj Chaturvedi had shared the script with the director duo in 2013. However, due to the time gap and lack of communication between the Sadhwanis and Pankaj, the writer’s credit inLaddoo was unintentionally missed (After Hrs edition dated February 22, 2019).

On February 25, Pankaj sent a legal notice to Ajay Dhama, who reportedly had made In The Name Of God in 2014 and even uploaded clips on his Facebook page. The notice states that Pankaj had shared the subject with Ajay in December 2013. However, since there was no development to their discussions, the idea of jointly producing it was deemed abandoned.

The notice also states that Pankaj was surprised to learn that Ajay had made a film and shared clippings online. Maintaining that he is the sole owner of the script, he assigned the copyright and intellectual property rights to Sameer and Kishore Sadhwani. It is further stated that Ajay has no right or claim over the script and he should remove all material shared on social media and other media platforms. Moreover, he should also hand over all the material related toIn The Name Of God to him.

In his reply to the notice, through his lawyers, Ajay questions why Pankaj waited till February 2019 to register for the copyright of the script (vide diary number 1818/2019-CO/L. The notice also maintains that the script of In The Name Of God was conceptualised by Ajay and writer-actor Rakesh Ojha, who also wrote the dialogue for the film. Moreover, it states that Pankaj was an assistant to Rakesh and has misused the facts.

On his part, Pankaj says, “My script was created in December 2013 and subsequently, I got it registered. I had recently applied for copyright just as an additional precautionary measure. All writers abide by getting their scripts registered. The script was shared with Ajay Dhama as he had shown interest in producing it under my direction. We disconnected post that on many things and nothing materialised and noticed recently during the ongoing events and through his claims in media that he has produced the same without my consent. The matter needs to be resolved in the court of law and all the evidence to this will be presented there.”

Both the shorts revolve around the theme that all religions are one and lead to one ultimate Almighty. The story is about a little boy who is sent by his mother with a tiffin for the temple pandit on occasion of his grandfather’s death anniversary. However, seeing the temple closed, he ends up at a mosque, where he gives the food to the maulvi.

Then, he came up with an idea to be headlined by newcomers, which we really liked and greenlit the project. We worked really hard on the film, the entire process from the first pitch to the wrap took us a year.”

On being asked about launching Shahid, Ramesh added, “He was very young then, so I asked him to wait for two-three years before I could launch him. When Ken narrated the final story of Ishq Vishk to me, I told him that I had a hero who fits the part and introduced him to Shahid.”

Geetu, a film on sex discrimination and honor killing in the making. Story n direction by Atul

Published

on

Film crew at Oxford Book Store, Cannaught Place on shoot

It was indeed a great pleasure to have done the role of a guest anchor in a short duration movie in the making, having scripted and directed by Atul Devrani a seasoned documentary maker at reputed Oxford Book Store in Cannaught Place the other day alongwith senior journalist Charu Tiwari and artist/ actress Guneet Kaur Narula who acted as the chief guest. The movie is based on the story of Gurneet in the film as she plays the role of the women story writer of Geetu.

The movie titled GEETU is based on the issue of sex discrimination and honour killing, a major social evil still prevalent in our society especially in the conservative patriarchal societies where love has no significance, since the orthodox society is embebbed in age old traditions of caste conflicts n squeezed thinking.

In this age of revolutionery scientific development n change in societal norms it looks absurd when one confronts girls n women being subjected to various squeezed social pressures n stigmas in villages n sub urban cities leading to honour killings.

Not only this but the unfortunates cases of embroyo destruction at artificial insemination centres have also become the order of the day in villages n rural areas killing girl child before birth.

Though this cruel act of the murders of girl child has been totally barred under the PNDT Act. ( Pre Natal Sexual Determination Test) with stringent punishment for several years n huge fine, such obnoxious acts are still being carried out in various sex clinics n gynocology private hospitals under the guise of treatment of pregnant women.

As a result the girl child ratio as compared with boys is diminishing in the states like Haryana, UP, Bihar, Rajasthan etc resulting in trafficking of women in these states to fulfil the sexual lusts of the rich from other parts of the country amounting to increased exploitation of girls hailing from poor families who are often pushed to forced prostitution by the professional gangs involved in trafficking n sex trade.

Apart from this the system of dowry is still prevalent in our society leading to immolation of brides after marriages for want of dowry. If one goes by the statistics of NCRB it’s shocking to note that the traumatic incidents of immolation of brides, throwing of acids on girls, sexual harrasment at work place, eve teasing, stalking and rapes are on the increase.

Though there have been lot of women commissions, social welfare departments n police doing enough to counter this menace but still lot more needs to be done before it’s too late. Awareness in the society against sex descrimination and honour killing is therefore the need of the hour.

Therefore Kudos to Atul Devrani for taking the cudgels in his hands for making a fantastic lesson giving movie titled GEETU to mobilise the women n girls n the narrow minded parents n society of the country spending his own money n resources. This what ATUL HAS TO SAY ABOUT HIS UPCOMING MOVIE GEETU:
