Had Tom been alive he would have been of 68 years by now ! Heartfelt Tributes

Tom Alter was one of the best and most celebrated actors’ of Bollywood having outstandingly acted in multifarious roles during his career spanning more than four decades in over 350 films.

A versatile actor, par excellence, born on 22nd June 1950 in Mussourie, Garhwal, Uttarakhand, today is Tom Alter’s 68th Birth Anniversary. Had Tom been Alive today he would have been 68 years old. Left for his eternal home just last year on 27th September 2017 having uncurable skin cancer in Mumbai, leaving his huge fan following in anguish, Tom was an exceptional actor having tremendous knowlege of Urdu, hindi and english apart from Garhwali.

It really sounds different and surprising that a man born to the english parents though in India, having the American past, is so extraordinarily well versed in Urdu, Hindi and even a local Garhwali dialect apart from English which was his DNA Tom considered himself to be an Indian than an individual with an English or American background.

An actor par excellence having been highly influenced and inspired by the then Super Star of the seventies after having watched his super duper hit film thrice or five times Tom Alter who usually watched English Hollywood movies, finally gave up teaching at the age of 19 and left for Pune to seek addmission in prestigious FTII where he studied acting under his teacher one Mr. Taneja alongwith Nasruddin Shah, Benjamin Gilani etc and got his first role in Bollywood silver screen in 1972 never to look back again.

A die hard fan of the legendary super star Tom Alter’s grand parents were missioneries who came to Lahore in 1920 from Ohio, US and after partition in 1947, while his grand parents stayed back in Pakistan, his parents migrated to India.

Tom’s father who was highly academic taught English and literateur at Allahabad after first settling at Saharanpur and then at Rajpur Road Dehradun.

At the age of mere 19 his father arranged a job of a teacher for Tom in Jagadhari, Yamuna Nagar, Haryana where he taught English at St Mary school.

He was born in Mussourie where he studied till higher secondary and went to one of the best American universities YALE for higher studies.

But destiny had something else stored for him in India and he came back to Mussourie just after a year to join as a teacher in Jagadhiri, Haryana which opened doors of his Bollywood entry, after he watched ARADHANA THRICE having been highly influenced by KAKA’S outstanding histrionics.

As a Kaka fan himself Tom Alter has worked with the Superstar in 3 films NAUKRI 1978; KUDRAT 1981 & JAANWAR 1983 … A die-hard Rajesh Khanna fan,Tom said in a interview-“The first morning of the shoot of Naukri, in Bangalore, I have been told to report in the lobby of the Ashoka Hotel by 9 in the morning. I was there by 8:45. I stood at the entrance, looking out on the gardens.” Rajesh Khanna descended the stairs,& walked up to me, crinkled his eyes,& said “Mujhe Rajesh Khanna kahte hain.” I went with him in the car to the park which was our location, & at lunch time I took my food into a corner under a tree,He came up to me & asked “Tum film on mein kyon aaye?”…The answer came from my heart – “Aap ki wajah se”..As simple as that, as true as that.!!!!!!!!

In the interview Tom shared how he used to come all the way from Mussoorie to catch up with first day first show of RK films at Regal Cinema in Connaught Place. “We saw Anand, Dushman and Amar Prem by buying tickets in black for the first day first show,” he laughs ..“After I had watched Aradhana several times I decided to get into films. It was the era of Rajesh Khanna. I decided that I wanted to be a part of this magical world of Hindi films and got admitted in FTII & graduated in 1974.” “I still dream of being Rajesh Khanna. For me, no film in Hindi cinema comes close to Anand. In the early 1970s, He was the only hero — romantic to the core, not larger than life, so Indian and real — He was my hero; the reason I came into films and He still is.” Tom concluded

A famous cricketeer during his school days in Mussourie, Tom never had the slightest of an idea that he would ever be an actor par excellence in the future and that too of Hindi silver screen having no interest whatsoever, to watch hindi movies, earlier. He was the first person to have interviewed cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar at a mere age of 16 when he made his first debut century.

Tom’s parents were extremely God fearing who’d established an Ashram at Rajpura Road to help the poor, under privileged and the needy. His entire family including his mother, father , uncle, grandfather were missioneries and served the church but were great secularists as was Tom. Even his elder brother became father in a Church at the age of 70 but Tom Alter was an exception who had special penchant for acting after having been overtly influenced by the histrionics of the super star of the seventies Rajesh Khanna aka KAKA.

Considering himself to be the most luckiest man to have born and lived in the heaven on earth Mussourie Tom Alter initially got the roles of the Englishman in Hindi films due to his fair colour and personality but later on did all kinds of roles.

Senior to the most popular actor Nasirruddin Shah in FTII Pune, Tom Alter played the unique role of Dr. Abdul Kalam in a Rajya Sabha TV serial and the roles of Gandhi, Nehru, Sahil ludhianvi, n other prominent freedom fighters etc in number of popular theatre plays.

A multifaceted and multi dimensional legendary icon Tom spoke Urdu with such a great fluency and precision that no other actor in Bollywood would have such a perfection. Having acted in over 350 films and scores of pivotal roles in Indian theatre in such a short span of four and a half decades as compared to other actors Tom Alter was a real asset for the Indian Film Industry.

His passing away from our midst at such normal age of merely 67 years when he still looked so young, energetic and enthusiatic towards acting his untimely loss will be felt forever not only in the film fraternity but also in the entire Indian fraternity amongst the billions of his fans who loved and adored him so infinitely and beyond limits. good bye Tom. Your creative acting and humanism will guide your unlimited fans forever. AMEN.

Happy Birthday Aishwarya Rai: The ‘Miss World’ who made us Proud!

Frequently termed “the most beautiful woman in the world” in media, Rai has been worshipped throughout her career for her green eyes, incandescent skin and her characteristic nazakat. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is the ninth most gorgeous woman in the world. She fearlessly dominated the International circuits and became one of the earliest actors to represent Indian Cinema on the global map. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan turns 45 on November 1, Thursday. But beyond the glitz and the glamour she’s surrounded by, and the aura and magnetism she seamlessly carries with her, there’s a fine performer beneath that alluring exterior.
As the actor celebrates her 45th birthday, let’s have a look at her pictures which made our hearts melt and know some amazing facts:-

She is a Padma Shri awardee and has also been honoured with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2012. In 2003, she achieved another milestone, becoming the first Indian actress to be a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival.

18 years back, when Aishwarya shooting for the film Aa Ab Laut Chalein, Ranbir was the assistant director. Aishwarya turned muse for Ranbir as he tried painting her.
In January, 2018,a 29-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh, India, suddenly started claiming that Aishwarya Rai is his mother and gave birth to him in 1988. Interestingly, Aishwarya was just 15-years-old in 1988.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, regarded as the turning point in Aishwarya’s career, this Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, saw the talented actress as a girl torn between her values and love. Nandini’s transformation from carefree, free spirited girl into a determined and vulnerable married woman was brilliantly played by Rai. She made us laugh with her antics and made us cry with her desperation to find Sameer. Rai won Filmfare Best actress award for the movie.
The actress had her first screen kiss with actor Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2 in 2006. When Amitabh Bachchan caught Aishwarya with Hrithik Roshan in the incandescent lip-lock scene, the atmosphere suddenly changed. Bachchan was called for an exclusive preview at Yash Raj Studios. He asked to remove the scene from the film.
Aishwarya and Abhishek’s first meeting took place in the film ‘Dhai Akshar Prem Ke’ set in 2000. At that time, Aishwarya was dating someone else and Abhishek was just a good friend. Proximity between the two increased during the shoot of Guru film. Aishwarya’s smiling face and nature attracted Abhishek.  Abhishek proposed her in the Toronto premiere of ‘Guru’ film. Aishwarya accepted the proposal immediately.
Happy birthday, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan!

Anupam Kher resigns as Film and Television Institute of India Chairman citing ‘busy schedule’

National Award winner and veteran actor Anupam Kher resigned as the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India on Wednesday.

Kher cited ‘busy schedule’ for the decision. ‘It has been an honour, a privilege & a great learning experience to be the Chairman of the prestigious FTII.But because of my international assignments I won’t have much time to devote at the institute. Hence decided to send my resignation. Thank you,’ Kher said on Twitter. He also posted his resignation letter, which was addressed to Information and Broadcasting minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.

Kher had succeeded Gajendra Chauhan on October 11 last year. Chauhan’s appointment had sparked outrage among students of India’s premiere film institute.

After his appointment as FTII director, Kher had also paid a surprise visit to the institute. The veteran actor recalled, “I came here as a student 40 years ago and today as well. I came here unannounced since I wanted to come as a student only. The first thing I wanted to do was to have a chat with the students and we did have a good conversation.” Kher had interacted with some students of the 2016 batch who were protesting over some academic issues.

The actor had stressed on the fact that students come in an organization to learn and hence solving their issues is of utmost importance. “I want to start my term on an optimistic note and also on a note that I want to do things,” he said.

The 63-year-old, best remembered for his stellar performances in ‘Daddy’, ‘Saransh’, has held the post of chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama.

Kher was awarded Padma Shri in 2004 and Padma Bhushan last year.

Kher’s predecessor Gajendra Chauhan’s 2-year term ended in March last year.

The TV actor and BJP member was named for the post of Chairman in June 2015.

However, his appointment had sparked a controversy and the students of FTII had gone on a strike for more than four months. The actor finally took charge as Chairman of the premiere institute in Pune on January 7, 2016, while the police detained protesters calling him a ‘political appointee’.

Notwithstanding with all the controversies, Chauhan had said that he was happy with what he had achieved. Some of major ‘achievements’ included reintroducing campus discipline, getting approval for converting the post-graduate diploma into a master’s degree, passing the budget to improve the institute’s infrastructure, among other things.

Arjun Kapoor on his new found bond with Janhvi-Khushi Kapoor: Large-hearted of them to allow me to call them sisters

Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor had always been very close to his sister Anshula but post Sridevi’s untimely demise, he found two more siblings in form of half sisters – Janhviand Khushi Kapoor, who are Boney Kapoor and Sridevi’s daughters.

In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, talking about his new found sibling bond, the 33-year-old actor said that his equation with Janhvi and Khushi is still evolving.

“I’ve not made any pretense saying that we’re a happy family and we’ve sorted everything. I just want them [my sisters] to be okay. It’s my job to be a good son to my father and the byproduct of that is I’ve managed to find two more sisters; they allow me to call them my sisters and that’s very large-hearted on their part,” said Arjun.

When asked about the family picture they clicked at Sonam’s reception, Arjun said, “We took that picture together because I felt it was the right thing to do for us to put up a united stand saying we are in it together, to figure it out. That’s the emotion we felt after all that transpired. That’s the only thing we have done as a unit to give you all – an image of saying that we are trying. And that is the truth — we are trying.”

Interestingly, Arjun and Janhvi are all set to make a joint appearance on Karan Johar’s chat show – ‘Koffee With Karan’. When asked if it’s a step towards getting to know each other better, the actor said, “There’s no knowing when we will actually know each other very well. This talk show gives me time to spend with her, an opportunity to know her as much as you guys will get to know her, ironically. That’s because I’ve not spent too much time with them beyond whatever little I could. But they are very nice kids.”

Arjun feels that it’s unfortunate that they met during Sridevi’s death. “I wish they didn’t have to go through what they’re going through. I don’t wish that for anybody because I’ve seen it and lived it. It’s just gut-wrenching. It breaks your back. Imagine having your back stabbed and then being told to walk; it’s not possible. So, they are going to take their time. And yeah, [getting to know them] it’s a very unique place to be in for me. It has given me a different perspective of life where I have realised there’s more to life than a Friday,” added the actor.

New multi storey building comes up at Kaka’s sprawling Bungalow Ashirvad’s place in Mumbai

A multistoreyed building has come up in place of Vardaan Ashirvad, the one time magnificient bungalow of the original and only Superstar of the millenium Rajesh Khanna, as recognised by billions of his fans globally. This new multistorey building near completion belongs to the owner Shashi Shetty, executive chairman of Mumbai based Allcargo Logistics who purchased Ashirvad from Kaka’s family after his sad demise for merely Rs 95 crores which was then quoted as the under rated price of the 6,500 square foot sea facing bungalow situated at Carter Road, Mumbai.

The abrupt sale of the Bungalow was the result of the then ongoing feud between Anita Advani (with whom the late star had a live in relationship) and the family of Rajesh Khanna, as the later were apprehensive about the valuable property. Anita had then claimed that the part proceeds of the sale of the property be given to her which was however denied by the court.

Ashirvaad was the Super star’s most likened Bungalow which he wanted to be converted into a memorial but after its demolition the super star of the millenium’s dreams have been razed to ground by his own family whom he loved so much. Ashirvaad was Kaka’s dream come true when he bought “Dimple” the earlier name of Ashirvaad for about 6 lakh rupees from the then popular hero Rajendra Kumar aka Jubilee Kumar who thought that it’s unlucky for him. Kaka was very fond of this house on whose main upper drawing room entrance he very lovingly fixed the huge picture decently framed consisting of Late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi voting for him in New Delhi alongwith Sonia Gandhi n him. A classic picture, the original negative of which was procured by me from one of the photo journalists of a leading Delhi paper after Kaka’s insistence.

Kaka named it Ashirvaad and felt it lucky for him as it was his stay here that since then his elevation as a Super star got a new flight. Kaka signed Hathi Mere Sathi exclusively to pay the advance money to Rajender Kumar which was Kaka’s precondition to sign the movie.

It was here that Kaka’s white Cheverolet/ Impala used to be kissed by hundreds of college going girls to convert it in a red or pink colour. It was here during his hey days as super star that a long bee line of Bollywoods director/ producers was formed to sign him for their movies. It was this house that saw Dimple’s exit after fued with Kaka. It was here that he was blessed with two lovely daughters. It was here that his one time lover besides Anju Mahendru, Tina Munim lived for several years and it was this very historic Ashivaad which once existed and where Kaka breathed his last on the black day of 16th July 2012 at the age of 70/71.

Today, Ashirvad is non existent leaving behind hundreds of memoroes of his hey days as the Super star of Millenium who made an outstanding mark in hundreds of films giving more than 25 super duper hits and still ruling the hearts of billions of his fans globally by his extraordinay and mesmerising histrionics.

A legend who never dies: He is none else but Rajesh Khanna ! I was also lucky enough to be at Ashirvad once and have the fragrance of its facinating environs while I was associated this towering film legend as his media advisor who considered me his younger brother, earnestly.

According to Bhupesh Raseen my close friend who remained in Kaka’s close proximity during n before his last days say:

Whenever I am in Mumbai, I just want to be there at “Aashirwad”, Carter Road where I have spent lot of time & many times stayed together with big brother, Rajesh Khanna ji.. While writing this post, I am still there opp. Aashirwad….. Missing Kaka ji badly..

Now there is no more “Aashirwad”. Present status of Aashirwad as per the below picture (today at 1:46 PM). ( picture of a new building with blue cover clicked by Bhupesh Raseen)
What’s your take, friends?

Baazaar Review: Saif Ali Khan makes the film shine!

Rizwan Ahmed (Rohan Mehra), an Allahabad-based share consultant idolises Mumbai business magnate Shakun Kothari (Saif Ali Khan). Aspiring to work with his ‘guru’, he heads to the city of dreams. And before he knows it, he’s sucked into the manipulation and machination of the money game.

Debutant director Gauravv K Chawla gives this film the feel of a thriller from the start. The opening frame of a young man standing perilously on the ledge of a high-rise in Mumbai and looking down at what could be a ‘dangerous’ end, makes you uncomfortable. But Rizwan is not about to jump. You heave a sigh of relief when he starts recounting his backstory; the reason why he landed on the ledge in the first place. The narrative of the green-horn, who has just begun his struggle in the stock market, is imaginatively interspersed with that of the cool, suave, grey Shakun Kothari piling up his billions through orthodox and unorthodox ways.

For the most part, the screenplay by Parveez Sheikh and Aseem Arora is engaging. But everyone at work here is clearly inspired by Oliver Stone’s The Wall Street (1987), revolving around Michael Douglas’ wealthy unscrupulous corporate raider Gordon Gekko and Charlie Sheen’s young stockbroker Bud Fox, as they borrow a few situations from the Hollywood film. While the build-up is a little leisurely in the first half, the second half makes up by offering a few twists and turns. The scene where SEBI  (Securities and Exchange Board of India) officials led by Rana Dasgupta (Manish Chaudhary) raid Shakun’s office is a fine example. The share bazaar language is sharp but has been used in a way that it can be understood even by those who are used to a common parlance.

If only the soundtrack was better, you wouldn’t mind the song sequences. Save for Kem Chho (Tanishk Bagchi) and the wedding number Adhura Lafz (Sohail Sen) — the songs slow the narrative’s pace.

Saif Ali Khan, who has been having a poor run at the box office, shows you once again that he is a better actor than many of his “superstar” contemporaries. He is flawless as the cool, calculating, unforgiving Shakun Kothari. The actor has picked up teeny-weeny nuances of his rich businessmen friends and brought it here. He is a treat to watch. The streak of grey in his hair adds a certain intrigue and class to his character.

Rohan Mehra makes an impressive debut. However, he is rough around the edges and would need more polishing if he has to stand up to stalwarts. Radhika Apte is good as his senior colleague Priya Rai. Chitrangda Singh lends due support as Shakun’s wife Mandira Parekh-Kothari.

Cinematographer Swapnil S Sonawane has kept the tone glossy. The bylanes and tall monstrosities in the concrete jungle called Mumbai have been captured effectively enough. John Stewart Eduri’s background score heightens the drama.

On the flip side, the film hits an emotional plateau. It fails to make you feel deeply for its characters. You wish you had a tear for at least one of them. Had that happened, Baazaar would be considered a much better investment.

If powerplay and money matters interest you, watch Baazaar.

Housefull 4 makers refute the incident of female junior artist being molested on the film’s sets

They makers of Housefull 4 on Friday clarified that the alleged molestation with the junior artist did not take place on the film’s sets. The statement from the makers added that Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh, who are a part of the flick, had packed up way before this incident occurred.

A female junior artist was allegedly molested on the sets of the fourth installment of Housefull on Thursday night after which she had filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused. Talking about the incident, Manoj Mitra, Executive Producer of Housefull 4 said, “It is disheartening to hear about this incident. I would like to clarify that the recent incident that showed up in the news related to the sets of the film, is something that evidently did not happen on the sets or during the shoot; it took place off the sets and hence I have to state that it is beyond our capabilities.”

Narrating her ordeal, the victim had said that she was sitting with a colleague on the sets of the movie, when two men namely, Pawan Shetty, Sagar along with four other men, came and began misbehaving with her friend. “When I started screaming, the production people and Akshay and Riteish, they also came outside. They only gave us the idea that we should call the police. The accused men ran away when they saw the production people and others,” she had said.

However, refuting the claims of the junior artist, Mitra said, “I would also like to clarify that Akshay and Riteish had packed up way before this incident occurred. It was their personal matter and nothing related to our film shoot.”

Meanwhile, Raman Dave, who is the head of the dancers, said, “We have learned that the argument was between the dancers and Pawan Shetty (who is an outsider) and it has nothing to do with our film.”

Dave added that he had left from the shoot when the incident took place, “but my set attendant Sandra was there on the sets and even she has mentioned that nothing happened on the set. All the details reported about this incident failed to be true and it did not happen on our sets.”

Jaqueline supports MeeToo campaign ! Says sexual exploiters are around us !

The globally popular MeToo social media campaign is these days almost daily in the news with the Bollywood and the media being its worst victims.

While several bollywood actresses have come out in the open to blame the male actors of sexual harrasment years ago particularly when they were in their teens or too young (about two decades ago) with Tanushree vs Nana Patekar imbroglio and veteran actors who once played the popular character of Haveli Ram in a Doordarshan serial long ago with several significant roles in bollywood movies, thereafter, namely Aloknath are these days embroiled in the Metoo campaign with FIRs registerd against them, several women journalists had also come out in the open against a veteran journalist M. J. Akbar who was compelled to put in his papers as the state minister of External Affairs.

However, Akbar had hired some quite an influential lawyers to contest his case which he’d filed against the first journalist Priya Ramani who’d accused him of the alleged sexual harrasment when he was the chief editor of the prestigious newspaper The Asian Age. Though about 17 women journalists have stood by Ramani’s side to testify against Akbar.

Since the start of the MeToo campaign which was vastly popularised in the social media, several bollywood actress have come out in favour of the campaign including the senior journalist Barkha Dutt terming this platform as the best option for the victimised women to raise their voice with courage and valour.

One of the popular actresses Jaqueline Fernandiz who was in relationship with film producer and actor Sazid Khan, has also been accused of alleged sexual harrasment in the MeToo campaign. Even renowned music director Annu Malik was blamed similarly by one of the actresses, the allegatiin denied by the former.

Sajid Khan has been accused by three women a journalist who went to seek his interview Ms Upadhyay and two actors viz Saloni Chopra and Rachel White. White has complained that Sajid asked her to strip in hishouse which the actress outrightly refused. Horrible, shameful n disgusting indeed.

Recently in an interview to the IANS news service prominent actress Jaqueline Fernandiz has come out in the open to support the Me too movement saying that sexual predators are present everywhere and that the dialogues about gender issues are long overdue not just in Bollywood but in the society as well.

In an interview published in HT city, reacting to the MeToo campaign in India the actor said : it’s very significant to remember that the gender dialogue is a coversation that’s long over due and let us not limit it to our fim industry. It is a dialogue which has been long overdue in our society as well. Unfortunately the sad truth is that the sexual predators are all around us.

Jaqueline Fernadiz is today counted amongst the most popular bollywood actors drawing a vast fan following with her movies going super hits.

Prominent actors like Anupam Kher, Rajat Kapoor, Sajid Khan Nana Patekar, Alok Nath, Subhash Ghai, painter Jatin Dass etc have so far been targetted in this campaign creating news headlines and lot of controversy in the media, Bollywood n the political corridors.

Giving her strong reaction against sexual harrasment of women Jaqueline says these sexual predators are sometimes in our own households, so we should not deviate from the actual issue which is not entirely about sex but is about power struggle. Therefore we have to be serious about it, if we want solutions, if we really want safe workplace for everyone and for the society.

The MeeToo campaign though had witnessed accusations by several actresses against some of the leading actors of Bollywood but in the case of M.J Akbar, a veteran journalist and the then union minister , the controversy created tremendous furore in the political and journalistic circles of India putting the position of BJP in quandary who’s spokespersons had to come out to defend him initially but finally asking him to resign as the controversy blew out of proportion and the ruling political dispensation has to draw a sorry figure as women’s safety n Beti Bachao Beti Padhao objectives of the ruling party were being affected by the allegations of sexual assault by 11 women journalists against the then minister of the ruling party. What’s your take friend ?
