The Chief Executive and co-founder of Walmart’s Indian venture Flipkart Group, Binny Bansal, has resigned following a probe into serious personal misconduct, Walmart Inc said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday.

Bansal has strongly denied the allegations, the company said in a statement. Bansal and his representatives could not be reached for comment.

“While the investigation did not find evidence to corroborate the complainant’s assertions against Binny, it did reveal other lapses in judgement, particularly a lack of transparency, related to how Binny responded to the situation,” the company said.

“Because of this, we have accepted his decision to resign.”

Kalyan Krishnamurthy, who heads the company’s main Flipkart e-commerce operation, would now act as chief executive for a broader group of businesses including apparel websites Myntra and Jabong, the company said.

Walmart earlier this year agree to pay $16 billion for a roughly 77% stake in the Indian e-commerce firm, Amazon’s main rival for India’s 1.3 billion consumers.

  • It was the US retailer’s largest-ever deal and a major move in its efforts to oppose Amazon at home and abroad.

“The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) report has been received and it has its sanction for the commercial operations of the metro service. The report also praised the civil and track work of the metro system, NMRC Executive Director P D Upadhyay said.

NMRC’s managing director has written to the state government for finalizing the date of inauguration, said Upadhyay, who was in Lucknow Friday, handed over a letter to Chief Secretary Anup Chandra Pandey.

He also said the fares of the Aqua Line would be decided in the NMRC Board meeting scheduled on December 28.

Indian Navy inducts deep submergence rescue vehicle into service

Published

The Indian Navy Wednesday inducted the ‘Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle’ into service at the Western Naval Command here.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba inducted the vehicle into the Navy.

“The induction of the vehicle has put the Indian Navy into a small league of world navies that have an integral submarine rescue capability,” a statement issued by the defence force read.

The Navy successfully concluded maiden trials of the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) on October 15, it said.

The vehicle can rescue as many as 14 people in one dive, a Navy official said.

The DSRV carried out underwater mating with a bottomed submarine, at a depth of over 300 feet. On successful mating, the DSRV opened its hatches and the submarine hatches and carried out transfer of personnel from the submarine to the DSRV, the Navy said.

These sea trials have proven the newly inducted DSRV’s ability to undertake rescue operations from disabled submarines at sea and provided the Navy with a critical capability, it said.

During the trials, the DSRV also dived successfully up to 666 metres, which is a record for deepest submergence by a ‘manned vessel’ in Indian waters.

The DSRV crew carried out remotely operated vehicle operations at a depth of over 750 metres and side scan sonar operations at a depth of over 650 metres, which are all ‘firsts’ for the Indian Navy, the statement said.PTI

Cyber space needs to develop its own AI, radars

Published

on

It’s the 30th anniversary of the Computer Security Day that the world started observing in 1988. Many of us who had joined the workforce in the early eighties were by then just getting to know what a computer looked like and what it did for businesses. Internet was yet to be born in its true form. On the mobile communication front, by-now forgotten pagers were all that the world knew of. Thirty years later, Smart Phones are endemic, 4G is on the verge of being passé and IOT is a reality.

Quantum Computing, Big Data, AI and the rapid evolution of the Net are leading us (read, the globe) into a deeply networked village – yes, “the more things change, the more they stay the same”. Our new cyber space stays afflicted with old world issues of conmen, theft and thuggery. Just the tools have changed; new ones are usually invisible to the human eye.

In this context, it’s important that we observe the Computer Security Day as an occasion to reinforce and strengthen our security habits. As individuals, whether at home or at work, we need to maintain integrity and secrecy of our passwords. Frequent changes to passwords is a basic safeguard requirement. Remember Aligarh? We all looked to it for the multi-lever hand crafted locks it made. Passwords are the cyber age equivalent of these locks.

Any chain is as strong as its weakest link. The same dictum applies to the Internet. Thugs and their ware – should we say, thuggery-ware, usually referred to as worms, viruses, Botnets, Trojans, ransomware, spyware, etc. can and do use every chink in the network to stage thefts, heists or simply prove their prowess in unsettling our life-as-usual. Given the millions of mobiles, tablets, laptops, desktops and myriad other endpoints in use, it’s a Herculean task to secure the cyber networks. Cyber hygiene, anti- virus applications and 24/7 watch over network traffic via sophisticated AI-driven algorithms have helped. Detection and neutralising of cyberattacks as they happen may add to the armour, but cyber incidents, often cross border, continue to be a fast-growing threat category (FGTC). To counter this reality, a range of new businesses and institutions have emerged. Data and Network Security are a big industry. Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) are operational in various countries to track and coordinate security efforts in the cyber space. Banking regulators globally are monitoring the financial system for steps taken to prevent security breaches and intrusions. With the pervasive reliance on computer systems and networks, other industries too – be it power distribution or transport services or, even health, are exposed to hacking possibilities.

The cyber landscape is on the cusp of a major change.  The writer is deputy MD and chief risk officer, SBI.

Microsoft overtakes Apple to capture spot of most valuable US firm

Published

Microsoft has surpassed Apple in order to become most valuable US firm. Microsoft at present possesses $753.3 billion in market capitalisation.

Apple, which became the first $1-trillion US company in August, came down to $746.8 billion on Friday, owing to lower-than-expected iPhone sales amid reports of its suppliers cutting cost and workforce.

While, Amazon with $736.6 billion is currently at third and Alphabet (the parent company of Google) with $725.5 billion is at the fourth spot.

Earlier in October, Microsoft recaptured its second spot in irder to become most valuable US firm, dethroning Jeff Bezos’ Amazon. The latest development came after Amazon reported disappointing quarterly numbers.

Apple Inc topped the list at over $1 trillion after crossing that threshold in September. Microsoft’s market capitalization was Wall Street’s highest in late 1998 through early 2000 before the dot-com bubble burst.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is not budging from introducing new tools and features to fight Google’s popular services. In its latest attempt at luring more people to use its products, the company has added a digital health tracker to its Android Launcher.

The Microsoft Launcher 5.1 beta release comes with a digital health section that tracks your total screen time, number of unlocks, and session lengths, Engadget reported.

In addition to that, there’s also a ‘hey Cortana’ voice control shortcut in the launcher. You can also sync both Sticky Notes and To-Do entries across devices. Interestingly, the digital health tracker is supported on devices running Android 4.2 and later, allowing even the old hardware owners do a check on their digital well-being.

Launched in 2004 and completed in 2018, Kejrival inaugurates the 254 metres high Signature bridge today

Published

on

The much talked about Signature bridge, twice the height of the iconic Qutab Minar, the medieval times’ historic moghul era’s heightest marvel has today been finally inaugurated by the Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejrival in the presence of the Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, the Delhi cabine and various lawmakers amidst lot of pushes n counter pushes inflicted on the Delhi BJP president and trans Yamuna, East Delhi MP Tiwari by AAP supporters who till yesterday had been complaining of not having been extended the invitation, intentionally, by the Delhi government.

The Deputy CM finally extended the invitation on his twitter handle, after realizing the deliberate blunder. The height of the signature bridge whose foundation and part construction was started during the tenure of Congress government’s chief minister Shiela Dikshit before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games, posesses the unique height just more than double of Qutub Minar situated at Mehrauli.

Qutub Minar is 73 metre in height being the highest building earlier constructed several centuries ago when there was not technology available. On the top of the Signature bridge a transparent glass box measuring 22 metres have been fixed through which the visitors could watch the outside world and enjoy the beauty from the unusual top.

About four elevators have been installed to reach here through which atleast 50 people can reach the glass box at a time.

According to a senior official, the elevators would start functioning / operating with sixty days. This bridge will, while on the one hand provide immense relief to the too and fro commuters of the primitive Wazirabad iron bridge built during the British era and has now become outmoded, it will also connect the Wazirabad Road with Karnal bypass including accord tremendous relief to the people of Bhajanpura, Loni, Bagpat, Khajuri, Mukerji Nagar, Timar pur, Buradi, people going through Azadpur, Sonipat and Western Uttar Pradesh.

Till now a vast population commuting through the primitive Wazirabad bridge were constrained to waste their precious one hour or more on daily basis, creating hell of a traffic snarls thus leading to infinite inconvenience to the commuters.

The signature bridge will also take off a considerable traffic load from the Kashmiri Gate and ISBT sides. Built at the total cost of Rupees 1518. 37 crores Signature Bridge is 251 metres in height, even more than the height of the statue of Sardar recently inaugurated in Gujarat. The height of the pyelone of this bridge would be 154 metres. It has 19 stay cables on which the bridge is depending. The project of the bridge was sanctioned in 2004, to be completed before the 2010 Commonwealth games but got delayed due to various unavoidable reasons. The bridge is an outstanding example of the world class architecture which got entangled in various controversies and therefore delayed escalating its costs to whopping Rs. 1594 crores.

Meanwhile in a tweet after being allegedly heckled by the AAP volunteers and police the East Delhi MP and Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari says in anger n threatening mode in a vedio released by ANI : Police ke jin logon ne mujse dhakka mukki ki hai unki shinakt ho gai hai. Main in sabko pehchaan chuka hun, aur char din mein inko bata dunga ki police kya chhez hoti hai ?

Are there similarities between Bofors and Rafale controversies ? After all both are defense deals ?

Published

on

The Rafale imbroglio is repeating the once most controvertial bombshell of merely 60 crores Bofors kick back that not only haunted the Congress party and the then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi for long but also led to his political dethroning leading to his own one time stooge Raja of Manda Vishwanath Pratap Singh climb to power with the help of the then non Congress opposition.

Though politically embattered Rajiv Gandhi finally got acquitted of the charge, but after his sad assasination. Then the ruling Congress party was on the back foot but today on the similar lines the current BJP led political dispensation under the prime ministership of Narendra Modi is in an unambiguous defensive, putting its several union ministers as trouble shooters on the job to counter the impending Congress invasion on Rafale.

While the Bofors kick back deal revolved around a petty amount of Rs 60 crores the current loss in the controvertial Rafale deal of France with Dassault aviation is in several thousand crores, say over 60 thousand crores, according to Congress chief Rahul Gandhi.

In the Bofors deal it is said that the then Prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was not directly involved but there were allegedly middleman like Quaterrochi of Italy who were named as the recipient of the bribe through the former but in the present case the Nehru Gandhi scion, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on the basis of the startling disclosure of the former French president Francois Hollande and later on by the Dassault Aviation’s technical heads followed by the wife of the present president Brigate Macron has allegedly pinned the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi as directly helping Anil Ambani of Reliance Defence bag the offset contract worth 30 thousand crores, out rightly rejected by the government and its ministers as completely baseless, frivolous, biased and fabricated.

While the former President Francoise Hollande on whose tenure and presence the deal was finalised has unambiguously revealed that after he was told for the favor, the France govt n Dassault had no choice but to accept it.

Similarly the wife of the present president Macron’s wife ( as per the article published in one of the dailies, Dainik Bhaskar written by its editor Gyanendra Pandey) said that the magnitude of the scam done in the Rafale deal and the staggering amount involved in it could have conveniently improvised/ altered the diminishing economy of a country in financial mess/ doldrums.

The first woman of France and its president Macron’s wife even went to the extent of shockingly questioning as to how a prime minister of any country betray the people of his own country by committing such a blunder.

As a result the most vociferous Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his entire media team that include former minister n youth Congress president Anand Sharma, AICC’s communication incharge n chief spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala, Jairam Ramesh, Abhishekh Manu Singhvi, Kapil Sibbal and Manish Tiwari etc have got enough ammunition who’ve tightened their belts and enhanced attacks on the ruling party dispensation at the centre and PM Modi through holding repeated press conferences, tweet attacks and addressing public mertings in the states likely to go to polls viz. Rajasthan, MP and Chattisgarh n even in Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP who’d fielded intelligent n eloquent Sambit Patra, Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Arun Jaitley and even the national party supremo Amit Shah are also doing their best to counter the Congress party’s onslaughts but after the startling disclosures of the former French president Hollande they seem to have come under defensive posture say political analysts.

Everybody know that the way prime minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah duo have been leading the saffron party’s jaggernaut towards incessant n seamless victories in state after state demolishing Congress party and the Samajwadi party’s strongholds in over twenty states after 2014 despite some failures on the demonetisation, GST, inflation, farmers suicides and banking fraud fronts, it looked as if the BJP is all set to te climb to the power saddle in 2019 and stage a comeback with the same enthusiasm as it had been doing in all the states of the country, but unfortunately eruption of conyrovertial issues like Rafale, banking frauds, incessant increase in petro product prices, LPG etc – highest since the last 70 years, and subsequent inflation, the party’s expeditiously forward moving juggarnaut seems to have developed serious flaws and defects finding itself difficult to continue its winning spree.

The continuous demand of the Congress led opposition for the JPC, CAG or CVC probe has also been turned down thus allegedly giving an unambiguous impression that something is definitely wrong and arbitrary in the French deal despite every condemnation by the union ministers in the government and saffron party leaders.

The best way to come out of this ever deteriorating situation is to go for an impartial JPC probe as demanded by the opposition as the country wants to know the truth threadbare say political analysts. What’s your take friends?

Holding the nicely written colourful playcards having made for this demonstration the sloganson themm read : Rafale cover up, out in the open, Modi corruption exposed, No farm loan waiver,Rs 1,30, 000 crores to Rafale scam, Farm loan waiver with cross on it and Rafale to Ambani and Rafale scam, we demand JPC. There was huge uproar inthe house today with the entire opposition demanding the papers of the entire Rafale deals to be tabled in the house and Joint Parliamentary Probe be held to ensure transparancy and probity in the entire excercise of the deal which the opposition termed as fishy.

It may be recalled that during the no confidence motion the Congress president Rahul Gandhi has openly accused the prime minister and the government for encouraging crony capitalism and helping the private players like Ambani having no experience in defence production being obliged with the offset contract of Rafale jets thus allegedly according them profit of several thousand crores to which prime minister Narendra Modi has taken Rahul Gandhi to task for being childish in matters of the nation’s security deals and leading to country’s mockery, globally.
