Muzaffarpur Police has lodged an FIR against actors Anupam Kher, Akshaye Khanna and 12 others on a district court’s direction in connection with the movie The Accidental Prime Minister.

The FIR was lodged at the Kanti police station on Tuesday after the court took objection to non-compliance of its January 8 order in this regard.

Kher, Khanna and 12 others named in the FIR are associated with the movie The Accidental Prime Minister based on the tenure of former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

The court had on January 8 ordered police to lodge an FIR against the actors and 12 others on a complaint filed by advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha with a plea that the movie presented Manmohan Singh and a number of other public figures in a bad light.

Ojha said he had moved the court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Saba Alam on February 4 to mention that its order was not complied with by the police.

“On this, the court issued a show-cause notice to Kanti police station through the Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police after which police lodged an FIR yesterday (Tuesday),” Ojha told reporters Wednesday.

When contacted, Senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar said after the matter came to his cognizance, he ordered the police station to comply with the court’s order.

Police have lodged the FIR under IPC sections 295, 153, 153A, 293, 504, 506, 120B and 34 which relate to promoting enmity among different groups, the sale of obscene objects, insult with intent to provoke breach of peace and criminal conspiracy etc.

In his complaint, Ojha named Kher (who plays the character of Manmohan Singh), as well as Akshaye Khanna, who plays the role Singh’s media adviser Sanjaya Baru, on whose book the movie is said to be based upon.

Others named in the complaint include actors depicting the roles of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress president (then national general secretary) Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his deputy Lal Krishna Advani and RJD leader Lalu Prasad.

The producer, director and other key persons associated with the film were also named in the complaint.

The complainant had alleged that he felt hurt upon watching the promos of the movie, which was not released at that time, wherein the public figures were portrayed in a manner that projected a poor image of the country.

The movie was released on January 11, 2019.

The government Tuesday introduced a bill in Rajya Sabha to amend the Cinematograph Act and impose strict penalty to combat the menace of film piracy. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore introduced the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Upper House.
The Bill seeks to amend provisions of Cinematograph Act, 1952, in order to tackle film piracy by including penal provisions for unauthorised camcording and duplication of films. To check piracy, particularly the release of pirated versions of films on the internet which causes huge losses to the film industry and the exchequer, the bill proposes to make film piracy offences punishable with imprisonment of up to three years and fines that may extend to Rs 10 lakh or both.
The proposed amendment states that any person, who without the written authorisation of the copyright owner, uses any recording device to make or transmit a copy of a film, or attempts to do so, or abet the making or transmission of such a copy, will be liable for such a punishment.

The Cabinet last week had approved the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s proposal for introducing the bill. The proposed amendments would increase industry revenues, boost job creation, fulfil important objectives of India’s National Intellectual Property policy and will give relief against piracy and infringing content online, an official statement had said.
The film industry has been demanding for a long time that the government consider amendments to the law preventing camcording and piracy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made an announcement at the inaugural function of the National Museum of Indian Cinema at Mumbai on January 19, 2019, to tackle the menace of camcording and piracy.

The digital platform gives me freedom’: Anurag Kashyap

Published

on

Last June, when Sacred Games premiered on Netflix, it was not only the streaming platform’s first Indian original series but was also immensely appreciated for its gritty plot and riveting performances. Based on author Vikram Chandra’s best-selling novel by the same name, it was directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane and featured Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Neeraj Kabi, Kubra Sait, Jitendra Joshi, Rajshri Deshpande as well as Pankaj Tripathi. The second season will be aired this year and its shooting is already underway. While Saif started filming it last December, Pankaj faced the camera for it earlier this month in Cape Town. Anurag, who is helming the second part, too, tells After Hrs how OTT platforms provide a huge relief to filmmakers.

Are you still basking in the success of Sacred Games?

Success or failure, I always have the same reaction; I simply disappear. Having said that, we didn’t know it would do so well. It made my audience visible to me. For years, people have told me that they love my films and I always asked them where have you watched them because most of the times, they don’t run for long at theatres. It has taken me years to understand the dynamics of it. My audience comprises working professionals who don’t have time on a Friday to stand in a queue to buy movie tickets. When they finally get the time, the movie is out of theatres, so they download them. But that’s the same audience that feels comfortable to pay a monthly subscription on an international streaming platform and watch my films. Suddenly, digital platforms are giving me the freedom and the budget that they won’t give anyone else.

It must be liberating for you as there are no restrictions and censorship issues?

It’s a relief. I’ve never been afraid of the Censor because I was fighting it when I didn’t understand it. But now, I don’t fight it, I have understood the process. If you are willing to go right till the Supreme Court, nothing will be cut in your film.

Today, with the digital space being perceived differently, do you think it has given filmmakers more confidence to jump on to this bandwagon?

I don’t know. There are academics who study these aspects. I spent so many years of my life with no plan. I will neither waste my time to see where the world is heading nor to analyse my success or failure. I like to do certain things. If somebody will shut the doors for me, I will find another window. That’s why by default, I’ve become the first person to explore every territory. I’ve never had a five-year plan. I neither live in the past nor in the future. I live in the present.

Not Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Irrfan Khan was the original choice for ‘Thackeray’

Published

on

Nawazuddin Siddiqui‘s uncanny resemblance to Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray in his biopic ‘Thackeray‘ has won him several accolades. But did you know that he was not the original choice for the role?

In an interview with MidDay, casting director Rohan Mapuskar revealed that it was Irrfan Khanwho was first considered for the part. If things had gone according to plan, it would be him playing Balasaheb Thackeray on screen. However, the makers were forced to look for an alternative because of the actor’s unavailability.

“Director Abhijit Panse, Sanjay Raut and I were brainstorming on who we’d like to cast and were contemplating [roping in] Irrfan. We had [superimposed] his image to see if it matched that of Mr Thackeray, and were convinced,” Rohan said, adding, “Irrfan, who was busy with another film, said he could only consider it after two to three months.”

It was ‘Thackeray’ writer, producer and staunch ‘Shiv Sainik’ Sanjay Raut who brought in Nawazuddin Siddiqui into the scene. He told us that during certain pandals [rallies], Mr Thackeray would be seated with the karyakartas on the floor. Following a subsequent discussion, we felt that Nawaz would be a better choice for the depiction of such scenes when compared to Irrfan. Zeroing in on him was a consensual decision,” Rohan said.

Interestingly, Amrita Rao was also not the first choice for Meena Thackeray’s part. The makers had initially approached Rasika Dugal for the role. However, since she was already paired opposite Nawazuddin in Nandita Das’s ‘Manto’, they ruled her out.

“We had arrived a day prior than scheduled to meet Amrita for the film, despite which she re-organised her meetings to talk to us, instead of [turning us away]. This act reminded me of how maasaheb [Meena] would treat her workers, ensuring that she fed them, no matter when they arrived to meet her,” Rohan said.
